ATV Sport Magazine is a publication devoted to the coverage of the sport of ATV racing. It is very similar to many other motor cross magazines, with the exception of being focused on one specific racing style. In the words of editor Glenn Hansen, ATV Sport is ”written for race enthusiasts and riders of all ages who enjoy sport riding and racing”. It is the sister publication to ATV Magazine, which was devoted to all-purpose, utility all-terrain vehicles.
The issue I have in hand is dated he April 2002. Glancing through the book, I see a medium amount of advertising, mostly for dealers of ATVs and dirt bikes, and equipment manufacturers. There is a very good balance between the ad content and the editorial. The full-color layout and design of the magazine is somewhat typical, being creative enough in its presentation without sacrificing the ease of taking in its content. The cover is vibrant and glossy. The book is over 100 pages in length, and printed on a fair quality stock. All in all, the physical appearance of the book is appealing.
The content of the book is also pretty standard. You have regular columns along with main features. The “Departments” section are the regular columns, where the magazine’s writers will talk about places they’ve been, testing and review of new products, letters to the editor, and others. Basically, the columns are short pieces to whet the reader’s appetite for what is to come.
The “Features” section is where the meat of the book is displayed. In this magazine, there is an extensive pull out section in the middle of the book, which is designed to be a guidebook to the upcoming race season. This preview lists dates and places (along with directions and phone numbers) for all racing events for the 2002 Grand National Cross Country and AMA Maxxis National Series. There are short discussions on the features and unique nuances of each track. New rules for the racing league are covered, as well as a recap of the events held in 2001. This guidebook is an excellent resource for any fan of sport ATV racing. I even found out that one of the races is held on the ranch of country music legend, Loretta Lynn!!
Other articles in this magazine include: an article about fuel, and proper octane levels to maximize performance; tips for building a race track; great places to go worldwide to ride or race; more in-depth reviews of new sport ATV models; and so on. In all, the dozen or so articles contained in this magazine provide as much information as one could want, and more, about any aspect of sport racing.
Overall, ATV Sport Magazine is a top-notch publication for fans of this sport. And it’s quite a bang for the buck, as an annual subscription (8 issues) runs for about $16, and a single issue $4.50. I can’t really figure how this magazine could improve, other than to branch out to cover a wider variety of subjects, like dirt bike racing, or utility ATVs. But if the mag were to do that, it would have to sacrifice the depth of its focus, which makes this niche magazine so valuable. In essence, it's only flaw is it real strength. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in racing, either as a fan, or as a competitor, to subscribe to this publication.
