| davebennetts's Full Review: Adbusters Magazine |
As a newcomer to the wonder of Epinions, I found myself searching for some interesting negative reviews or products of a more unconventional sway. I found both in a teaser to a review of my favorite literary phenomena, Adbusters. The reviewer in question calls the Canadian consumer culture critique "communistic" (this should not be a word) and seems to have his American dream shattered by the publication. This got me all riled up and excited to share my own views on the magazine.
Adbusters is a advertising parody/political commentary which looks and reads differently every month. It is no wonder that this quadmonthly is not up there on the racks with our Times and Cosmos, as it threatens all the complacency and greed which these cat box liners symbolize. Not to mention a cover cost lofty enough to match the ideals of the editors (both of which are worth the price paid). How many average Janes and Joes do you know who want to fork out the price of two extra value meals to see the whole American way of life thrown into question? More than you may imagine.
I grew up in the suburbs on the plains being fed 8 hours of Televised fluff daily, seldom hearing a discouraging word, and never having access to fresh ideas with healthy, proactive goals, such as those voiced on the pages of Adbusters. There is an ever-increasing population of us out there who care about more than acquisition for one's-self. It is for us and those evolving into us that Adbusters is published. Every edition is a work of art and a tiny revolution in and of itself. You can find it at your health food chains, quirky record stores, or larger magazine shop, or you can order it from their splendid website www.adbusters.org (where you can also sign up to receive a rare and welcome email as part of the Culture Jammers Network, detailing actions you can take to help keep the world free of greedy noise). If you get an issue, share it with a friend, whether they are communistic of capitolistish. They are sure to appreciate the humorous insight and creative integrity, or more than likely, feel exceedingly threatened. And they should, as we are coming to wipe away the tired and ailing American Dream to replace it with one filled with that great, high-spirited insight and integrity, as seen on Adbusters.
