| applecore's Full Review: Adbusters Magazine |
Are you A Corporate Big-Wig? High Profile land developer? Advertising Executive? Do you like to relax on the couch, enjoy a few puffs on an imported Cohiba, a good read in the old Ducks Unlimited newsletter, or keep ahead of the competition by reading Internet Week or Electronic Commerce. Hmmm. Then I highly doubt you would appreciate Adbusters. It may even anger you. BUT! For those who feel compelled to delve into the enemys mind, this may be for you!
I have always felt it important to make it a point to not be targeted. I hate being a gen-x-er, more importantly, I hate to be categorized at all. Unfortunatley, in todays world of Politics, Capitalism, Corporate Welfare, and Mass Marketing, these corporate folks have got me down to a science( gee, cant wait for Neural Networking, eh kids?).
Enter Adbusters!! Kalle Lasn and the nice people at Adbusters have been providing the anti-consumers with clever articles, expelling the myths of companies to the likes of Microsoft, McDonalds, and Coca-Cola.
This magazine is about waking up! Anti-Big Business. Anti-Capitalism. Anti-Facism. Sheesh, if you dont feel liberated already, check your freakin' pulse! Of course in the grand scheme of things, Adbusters is about mental activism, as well as physical. They document and support marches, protests and rallies. There are avant-garde photos, clever advertising parodies and often cynical columns. They help support and organize campaigns such as National Buy Nothing Day. And educate the unaware of corporate mergings and development: Phillip Morris owns Starbucks? Ok, so thats not really a big shock, but you get the point. Basically they expose a LOT of underground factual information.
I suppose it's easy to make the assumption that Adbusters is a partisan magazine. Rest assure, the ideology behind Adbusters is clearly activist inspiring for every walk of life. Many of the professors at my school embraced the refreshing dynamics of Adbusters, as have friends and family members. I urge you to flip through any edition, and keep an open mind, to those more inclined to the conservative walks of life, for if you stand for nothing, you'll fall for anything.
