| dbirchall's Full Review: Adbusters Magazine |
For years, Adbusters has been devoted to exposing the lies and hypocrisy of commercial advertising and the social and cultural dynamics behind it. In addition to this magazine, their modus operandi involves the "fight fire with fire" approach of creating biting satirical counter-advertisements. Unfortunately, most of the television networks that have been approached to run these ads have opted not to, for fear of losing commercial ad revenues - what a strange coincidence!
If you need to be reminded that advertisers are out to control your mind, and are willing to tell you whatever you want to hear in the process, even if it's nowhere near the truth, this magazine will come in handy. Benetton's magazine Colors will also help you maintain a healthy distrust of homogenous multinational corporations and their messages.
Adbusters would make an excellent gift for loved ones who are already convinced big business is out to dominate and ultimately ruin the world, be they environmentalists, punk-rockers, fringe political candidates or cabin-dwellers who send strange packages through the mail. It would also make an excellent gag gift for anyone you know who's in the advertising business, or on the board of any corporation likely to be skewered between its covers.
Unfortunately, Adbusters' intense focus on one particular form of evil in the world prevents it from being a good read for those looking for a more general magazine.
