"Dog is my co-pilot", the catch phrase of the pet dog magazine The Bark, embodies the playful and creative tone of this "modern dog culture magazine."
I remember the first time I saw The Bark. "Now here's a cool dog magazine!", I thought.
As a former artist and designer-turned-dog trainer, I had seen enough cutesy, "fluffy-wuffy", tacky dog related ephemera to gag a Rottweiller. I was agape when I first stumbled upon this fabulously artful magazine with articles that were actually of interest to the non-American Kennel Club- enthusiast. The Bark tackles topics ranging from dog community politics, reviews of dog-related books and art, to dog health and current events.
An issue from fall/winter of 2000 has a photographic survey from "The Dog-100 Years of Classic Photography" (Chronicle Books) as well as a dog's travel guide to Portland Oregon, an article on "scooping etiquette" and product reviews for stylish doggie gear.
Not only are the articles superbly written, but the plentifulcolor illustrations are works of art themselves. There are several pages for advertisers in the back of the magazine, and only a moderate amount of ads scattered within the body of the magazine.
Watch for this magazine to go places. In just several years, it has grown from a local San Francisco/Bay Area publication to nationwide review and content. If only The Bark could publish more than 4 issues a year, I'd be in total doggie heaven. At $15 for 4 Issues, the price is a bit steep, but the quality is so great, that I'm not complaining.
