| anildash's Full Review: Brill's Content Magazine |
Yeah, yeah, yeah, the knee-jerk criticism is "But who watches Brill's?" And that's a valid point. But until we have a special "spot the conflict of interest" section of Epinions to rate the media, Brill's can effectively act as a smart media consumer's Cliffs Notes.
The mere fact that Brill's is on the newstands next to Time and Newsweek and T.V. Guide is progress, showing that a (admittedly somewhat rarefied) mass audience might have an interest in the meta-info that assigns context and, perhaps, motivation, to the magazines, newspapers, music, art, and television that we consume.
And the "Stuff We Like" section is just plain fun.
That's not to say that I didn't have misgivings when the magazine first came out.. Steven Brill's track record left me less than impressed. But the proof is in the pudding, and Brill's Content has made it easy, and even entertaining, to learn about the business of making media.
Perhaps one of the best reasons to buy Brill's is because a young person might read your copy, and it might help them to understand the complex motivations and manipulations that drive our mass markets. Then maybe they can graduate to Adbusters...
