dequebec's Full Review: Good Housekeeping Magazine
Since my childhood, my mother has regularly kept 3 publications on her nightstand: Reader's Digest, Ladies Home Journal, and Good Housekeeping. Suffering from boredom at the age of 14, I decided to casually pick up Good Housekeeping and peruse its pages. Hooked on the monthly contributions, I continue to read my mother's magazines every month.
Generally considered a "woman's" magazine, Good Housekeeping has brought stories about relationships, fashion, self-improvement, cooking, and celebrities into American homes for decades. The magazine combines graphic-heavy mini-features with longer, multi-page stories to make for a leisure but satisfying reading experience.
Each installment of Good Housekeeping begins with several pages of pictures and short blurbs on beauty and fashion. Here, you will find information on the latest trends in makeup, hair products, hair styles, clothing, and perfume. These pages often offer a side-by-side comparison of different products, complete with a pricing guide. Sometimes, the magazine makes suggestions for women of varying sizes and complexions, and has pictures of celebrities modeling these new looks.
Next are several pages designed by monthly contributers to Good Housekeeping. Heloise has been running her "Household Helpline" for years, assisting readers with everyday (and not-so-everyday) housekeeping emergencies. Check here for advice on stain and odor removal. This month's question: "we have little insects and ladybugs everywhere. Can you please give me some tips for getting rid of them?" Peggy Post, taking over her mother-in-law's position, spoons out advice on etiquette-for some reason, I find this column quite amusing and at the same time informative. Best of all, Ms. Post clarifies modern etiquette issues that cannot be found in traditional books of manners. Dr. Joyce Brothers responds to inquiries of a personal nature, particularly responding to questions about relationships. From a psychologist of her stature, this advice can be trusted. Finally, Dr. Nancy Snyderman contributes articles about medical issues; these articles are surprisingly accurate and complete, unlike medical articles in similar magazines.
Good Housekeeping dedicates a section of each magazine to its "Good Housekeeping Institute Report". They provide reports on household items, such as small and large appliances, that the "institute" has tested themselves. The institute carefully and thoroughly tries these products with pride. Those products given the Good Housekeeping Seal are guaranteed by the magazine for 2 years; GH will replace the product or refund the price if it becomes defective within 2 years of purchase.
GH dedicates 20-30 pages to food information and recipes. GH stays with the mood of the season, offering "cool" and "refreshing" treats for summer, great Thanksgiving banquets, and Christmas cookies in December. GH tries to offer solutions applicable to today's woman, such as "7 weekday dinners for 4 people under $10" or "fast and easy summer pastas". GH always lists the nutritional content of each dish after the clearly-written and easy-to-follow recipes. The recipes are all listed in an index near the back of the journal.
The rest of the magazine features stories pertinent to women. There is always at least 1 story about child-rearing, 1 on relationships, 1 on work/relationships, and 1 on home design. Celebrities line the covers; GH favorites include Julia Roberts, Rosie O'Donnell, the McCaughy family, Meg Ryan, and other women in the 30+ age group. GH maintains a supportive tone throughout the journal, and seems honestly interested in helping women throughout their diverse endeavors. Whether you are single, married without children, a career women, a woman returning to school, an adoptive parent, a working mom, or a home-schooler, you will find plenty of articles of interest and assistance to you.
Good Housekeeping runs an inexpensive $1.95; the annual subscription price is $12.
