Don't walk into your local magazine store and ask for this magazine by name, they will direct you to the music section--happens all the time. If you are lucky enough to find this at your local magazine store, happy day! Unfortunatly, it is becoming harder and harder to find--maybe it's being snapped up more quickly?
We have been reading this magazine for probably 20 years. Yup, it's an old one! I can't say it's better now than it was then, just different. They still feature the same great artwork, unique veiw stories and articles, but it seems that in the recent issues they have many more ads and much more space devoted to simply artwork, and fewer of the great stories. Who knows, maybe I'm just getting older and it seems that way.
When they came out with the movie years ago, we were first in line to see it. It didn't dissapoint. The music was fantastic, it was seeing the magazine put to life and accompanied by the great rock bands of the time. We anxiously awaited the arrival of the movie to tape--no such luck. We understood the problem was with getting all the bands who's music was used to agree to royalties. Eventually, it was released just within the past few years, and it is a permenent part of our video library. It does loose something in the translation to the "small screen" (we have a 52" TV, but it's still not the same as the movie theater) but that great music and visuals are still there.
What does Heavy Metal contain? Well, it's a sci-fi magazine, featuring lots of futuristic story lines, all drawn in every little gory detail. If someone gets killed, you can bet there will be blood and body parts all over the frame. It's not a kids comic book by any means. Some of the stories carry strong sexual lines, and yup, you will see nudity--male and female. It's not Penthouse or Hustler, though, so don't expect to see comic style porn here. For those who have been reading it for a while, there are story lines that continue through the issues, kind of like a serial, others are one issue stories.
If you are a die-hard sci-fi fan, you will love this magazine. If you are a fan of very futuristic artwork, you will love this magazine. If you think that just enough is too much--don't bother, you won't like it. This magazine goes over the top.
