Several years ago, I was a teenage girl addicted to girly fashion mags. All of a sudden, girls my age were being fed a deluge of new magazines, telling us how to dress, do our make-up, and then go out and catch our dream guy.
So when JUMP hit the newsstands, I was eager to pick it up because it was, well, new. I was immediately intrigued by the motto: "For Girls Who Dare to Be Real". It only took a few months, however, before I stopped picking it up every month. Why? Because in trying to be different from other magazines, I felt alienated by JUMP because I was interested in the fashion and beauty stuff...well, to an extent, at least.
So a year ago when I was offered a free subscription, I "jumped" (Pardon the pun.) at the chance. I was interested to see if, two years later and in my opinion, much more sophisticated (haha), I would find myself intrigued by JUMP once more. And I found the answer very quickly: no.
Now, while JUMP does provide many girl-empowering articles, which I enjoyed very much, I felt that their elitist attitude towards normal teenage girls still threw me off. It seemed as if you had to be a snow-boarder, or an animal activist, or something of the like to read the magazine. For a normal teenage girl like me, I felt alienated once again. JUMP seemed to scream that it's not okay for you to want to play in makeup, or like boy bands, or any of those other joys of youth.
Now, I realize that I may sound like a jaded cheerleader-type, which I assure you I am not. While the magazine does have some great content, it takes a lot for me to get over the egotistical attitudes of the editorial staff at JUMP to read it. If the girls they tell us to be are real, then why don't I see them walking the halls of my school?
This magazine is perfect for those days when the world is getting you down, and all you want to do is go home and get under the covers. But a light read, it's not. Proceed with caution: This magazine will have you wondering whether you're a good person or not.
