Yesterday I wrote an epinion about Writer's Digest, and how I find it so helpful. Today, I'm going to talk about The Writer. It's funny how two magazines can cover the same material, and in such different ways. Both do it well, but with totally disparate styles.
The Writer is class all the way. While Writer's Digest changed their format and some content at the beginning of the year, the Writer's format has been the same forever, in all the years I've been getting this magazine, it's never changed. It's comfortable, and you know you can depend on the information inside. It's never flashy, just chock full of good writing wisdom and information.
The Columns
There aren't a lot of columns in this publication, they mainly stick to giving you a lot of good feature stories every month. They do include a listing of markets each month. Each month a different market is covered, which is really nice, because most writers I know specialize in certain areas, and you can find the entire listing in one magazine. The July issue for instance, covers book publishers. They also print market news, and a market newsletter every month, that update addresses, editors, and who is no longer in business. It's a lot of useful information, all neatly put together so you can find it all at a glance.
The Features
The feature stories in each magazine are always useful and full of information. Again, like Writer's Digest, they may repeat topics through the years, but I find that acts as a review for me, and helps me hone my skills.
In the July issue, there's and article on "Writing a Salable Op-Ed Piece" and "Writing Fiction on Two Levels." They are both excellent, and gave me some good ideas for articles and my book.
I love The Writer because it presents the information basically, with no fanfare. There are no photographs in the magazine, and that doesn't bother me at all. I want to learn more about what I do, to make it better, and that's exactly what this magazine does for me.
The Writer is as comfortable to me as a well-worn slipper, and just as wonderful to curl up with on a cold winter night. Just like Writer's Digest, it gives me ideas, and ways to make my business grow and prosper. It also makes me think creatively, and gives me support when I need it. I know it was created by writers, for writers, and that makes me feel good.
You won't find a lot of advertising in The Writer, no sleazy ads for self-publishing, etc. It's high quality all the way. I suppose that adds a kind of "snob value," but I like it, and I like the information it contains. I'll continue to buy it, and enjoy it. I'd use it even if I never wrote another word, and I'd recommend it to anyone who was interested in learning more about the craft of writing, beginner to expert. Behind it's unassuming cover is a gem, waiting to be discovered!
Each month, The Writer Magazine delivers inspiration to both novice and experienced writers. Professionals and famous authors provide tips and practic...More at Magazineline
