stankwalrus's Full Review: Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik by Outkast
FINALLY!!! That was how I felt as a high-school freshman in '93 when I saw Outkast's video for the single 'Player's Ball' on BET's Rap City. Being a native of Georgia, I always loved rap music and hated the fact that there weren't any nationally-recognized Southern rappers. Outkast's 'southernplayalisticadillacmuzik' kicked down the bi-coastal door of hip-hop and paved the way for the Cash Moneys and the Nellys of today. Here are my favorite tracks...
southernplayalisticadillacmuzik-the song that had kids from the Bronx wishing they were eatin' catfish and grits in the back of an tinted Cadillac
Funky Ride-an instrumental featuring a killer lead guitar solo and an interesting, ahem, climax
Git Up, Git Out-great motivational song about sleeping and smoking your life away
Crumblin' Erb-a slightly psychadelic funky number about smoking, well, you know
From this debut it was easy to tell that these guys were serious about their music. Subsequent albums would see them stretch more than just the geographic barriers of hip-hop, but musical ones as well.
