atombaum's Full Review: Hank Wilson's Back! by Leon Russell
I asked for a copy of Hank Wilson's Back for my
birthday (44 now, gawd) as my room mate had the vinyl
version of it back in 1980 (when I was 20) and it stuck
in my mind. We used to get drunk and listen to it. Great
songs to listen to in that state. Anyway, hearing it again
so many years later, it sounds much better than I remember.
For one, I don't remember much because of the drink. Great
toe-tapping music. I am really a strait ahead jazz fan but
my musical taste is all over the map. Country is one of the
last genres that I consider myself to be a fan of. Maybe
part of the allure of this recording is that I know Leon
from his Live Album (triple vinyl set) and the Concert for
Bangladesh record as well as a few of his studio recordings. Great song writer and singer (yes, singer). Must have for
Leon fans and country classic fans. Do you know Leon
played piano on "Monster Mash"? It's true. He was a
studio musician for a long time before he started to make
his own records. Never heard how he met George Harrison
though. Anyone know that story? Get this record!
