YES! That energy is what makes this album great even if it wasn't really calculated and didn't really intend on going one direction or another.
Thanks for stopping by, Mr. Vox. As always you make great points.

Ha! I actually own the cover pictured here. I wonder why the covers changed based on release...

like others in this comment section, i never exactly 'got' what was so great about this album either. so sorry!
however, i DO love the cover on epinions... almost psychedelic, rather than the nifty pink and yellow version i own.

I am not much for punk music, but I have read a lot about the sex pistols and the crazed Sid. I recently read a book about his girl friend Nancy that gave in interest in this group. Nice review.

i want it that way (Reply to this comment)

Excellent review! I too love Never Mind the Bollocks, and somewhere in the past ten years it's become standard to downgrade it. Which doesn't mean i can't, if i squint, see Paul's point about the album's calculation: certainly, in a set of 12 songs, we get 12 different ways to take the piiss out of people, and the thick, rich array of Steve Jones's guitar lines wasn't exactly laid out in a bunch of first takes.
But, like, if an album's supposed to be loud and rude and frothing at the mouth, i'd _rather_ have the band take the time to froth properly, and plan their spittle's impact; i'd rather they build up their hand muscles so that their middle finger looks impressive enough. The Sex Pistols and the (producers of the) Backstreet Boys both cared about what their albums sounded like: that's _good_. Only the Sex Pistols had energy and great songs.
cheers,
- Brian

Ya know...I knew that wasn't right. Thanks for clearing it up. It seems as though there was much internal "discussion" about said manager. Lydon didn't like him, Jones did.
My bad ;)
Thanks for stopping by and clearing up my relatively ignorant mistake.

You clearly like the band and album more than me, but this was still a great review. One thing though, they didn't exactly sack Malcolm, Lydon left the band, the rest carried on with him for a while, trying to find a new singer, before Sid died and the band just kind of petered out, with Jones and Cook kind of becoming musical whores.

Hmph. Well...I fixed the Stooges. I actually meant to put the Ramones and even checked to make sure that they were actually before the Sex Pistols.
As far as the music goes, I never said it was subpar. Ever. I said it was rough and I said production was shoddy but the songs themselves are excellent.
Thanks for stopping by.

See--I don't *get* that off of them at all. Then again, I'm not entirely up on the Sex Pistols so I can't say I'm educated on the topic.
I've also never heard Lydon's second endeavor to comment on.
As always, Paul, thanks for stopping by & leaving such a thoughtful comment even if we don't entirely agree.

Stooge (Reply to this comment)
by knowncutter
Unless you were refering to America's obsession with the three stooges I believe you accidently typed the Stooges twice.
Anyways I can't quite understand the emfatuation everyone has with this album. The music seems to be subpar, a fact even you seem ready to admit. I know that it's rebellious and a smack in the face to politically correct society but in the end the judgement on a music album should come down to the music.

Urgh... (Reply to this comment)

I think you probably know that I think these guys are totally over-rated. I've always regarded them as sort of the Backstreet Boys of punk, a calculated cash-in on the part of a smart, manipulative manager - which, of course, colors my appreciation of their album.
That said, you've got a point about John Rotten/Lydon's wonderful frontman-ness. I guess I just prefer it in the context of Public Image Limited, which always struck me as a far more dynamic, unpredictable endeavor.

I still listen to it whenever I'm feeling disinfranchised or just very p*ssed off.
I love all the songs on that record.
I also recommend The Filth & the Fury by Julien Temple. Tells the real story of the Sex Pistols.
