Yeah, I could never quite get into Stereopathetic. A little too "out there" at times....not that "out there" is a bad thing, but out there like that disc tended to be a bad thing sometimes.

Hey, maybe I should give it another spin myself. :)

Thanks for stoppin' by.

This CD plays closest to polished pre-Beck than the oddly engaging above-mentioned disc. Very decent review and my copy will get another spin shortly.

Ha! HA! My bro can bite me on this one...mostly because I've had a chance to give it a good listen and I still hate it, something that wasn't quite the case with Snog. Trust me, I'm never going to find myself randomly singing "Ziplock Bag" at inopportune moments...it's just not that kind of song. If I do start singing it, and it happens to be in public, it's very likely my day will end with a field trip to a padded room.

Just thought I'd say. :)

Thanks for the comment, Evil N8...

I'm also more of a fan of acoustic Beck than party Beck myself, and this disc still did scare me off for quite a while when I bought it....it wasn't until I grew accustomed to LO-lo-LO-fi Beck (Stereopathetic Soulmanure, some old demos) that I really came to appreciate this album. Suddenly it seemed well-produced, and I could listen to it.

to get into Beck, but I do think he's a genius, in many ways. Hell, look at the title "Cyanide Breath Mint" - that oughta tell ya something right there, ya know? Great title, and I loved the lyrics for "As shole".

And you shouldn't talk about what your brother likes that you don't, because you know you've had to eat crow before. :) Just warning you, Michael!

You're right, freak, he is simply himself, and that's what's so wonderful about him. Honestly, I wish he'd send Nigel Godrich down the road and just do another raw, unpolished disc like this one sometime, but it'll probably never happen now that he's got the cash to make his albums sound "good". Ah well, so be it, I still love the guy. :)

Thanks for stopping by!

Yeah, right. I give a 4-star review to a lo-fi album by someone who can barely sing, so now everyone else has to do the same. Actually, you make it sound awfully interesting in its disheveled way: Beck's gotten lazier with lyrics over the years, and it's easy to forget how inspired his images used to be.

Unfortunately, Mellow Gold was in the regular after-closing playlist when I worked in the fast-food industry, so I remember how every few songs he'd work in a "loud, tuneless, distorted mess that should never have seen the light of day". A couple of those _plus_ grill-cook flashbacks? Despite your lovely review, I vote no.

paying no mind,
- Brian

I always admired his attitude. He, in my opinion, was simply himself - no matter how bizarre he seemed to others, he never changed the way he acted to conform to the typical "cookie-cutter pop icon" way of life to please people.

Oh yeah, great review too :]
