PoeticLegend's Full Review: Boys for Pele by Tori Amos
I've had a variety of Tori fans comment to me that Boys for Pele is the most difficult of Tori's albums to "get into". While there are some standard straight-forward songs on this album such as "Caught a Lite Sneeze", many of the songs are much less accessible than the piano-driven ballads on her earlier albums, or even the electronica-twinged "from the choirgirl hotel" and "to venus and back". In light of this, Boys for Pele was the last album of Tori's I bought, and I found people to be correct. I would listen to "Caught a Lite Sneeze" or "Talula" and be done with it... however, as I gave it listen-through after listen-through, I found myself beginning to appreciate the other songs, the haunting "Hey Jupiter" and "Marianne", although my favorite song on the album is "In the Springtime of His Voodoo", which changes tempos and moods as much as the album does. This album doesn't open it's arms to you, begging you to love it... it forces you to work your way into its heart, to delve into Tori's little universe... but once you do, you'll know why it was worth it. On a side note, many of the songs use the harpsichord, a fascinated and unusual instrument, I haven't heard many other musicians use it.
