thelocust's Full Review: The Burdens of Being Upright by Tracy Bonham
I remember when this album came out. I was still in high school, and I thought staying up late was the absolute tops. I was watching one of the late-night shows, and Tracy Bonham was the musical guest. She played "Mother Mother", which is also track one on this album. I was absolutely hypnotized.
I knew immediately that I needed this CD, but I didn't manage to get it until 5 years later.
Already a fan of female singers of the likes of Tori Amos and Poe, Tracy's soft guitar strumming and singing fits right in, up until the point she yells "Everything's FINE!" From then on the album gets deeper and stranger, sometimes soft, sometimes screaming, all times speaking something to the heart that just can't be said in a normal way.
I didn't think the album had affected me too much, until I found myself humming "Navy Bean" for the next three days.
If Tracy Bonham played a gig on the road paved with Good Intentions, I would follow her voice right on down.
