Social14's Full Review: My Faith Will Stay by Cheri Keaggy
Cheri Keaggy's second album, My Faith Will Stay is a great one. I have it on cassette, and recently purchased the CD because i love it! The album came out in 1995, and has remained a favorite since.
Cheri Kaggy is related to Phil Keaggy through marriage (as one of my readers wanted to know), and she is younger - probably early 30's. She is not a high soprano as Sandi Patty is, but she is not an alto like Kathy Troccoli. Her voice range is more in the middle. She uses background vocals in all her songs, as well as a full band.
Let me tell you a little about the songs, and why I like them so much.
1: My Faith Will Stay
This song is upbeat. You cannot help but sing along as she (along with the background singers) sing. "My faith will stay! My faith will grow! Sometimes fast, sometimes slow
Through the wind and through the rain, By Your grace, my faith will stay." It accurately describes the life of all Christians.
2: Keep On Shinin'
This song is also a faster song. It tells us to keep shining God's light to others. We do this by holding fast to our Father, God, in heaven. This song is a great encouragement!
3: Lay It Down
This song is one of the slower ones. It serves as a reminder that we need to remember to lay everything down before God - both those good things and those that are bad. I love this song as it reminds me that he really cares.
4: Sweet Peace
I was able to see Cheri sing this song at Kingdom Bound at Darien Lake. Wow. You can tell she really feels the words that she is singing. "Sweet peace of God, flow over me, Like a gift from heaven". This song really expresses God's peace as it leaves the listener both thoughtful and relaxed. It too is a slower song.
5: He Will Look After You
This serves as a reminder that God is watching over us. Her sweet voice sings out this reminder, refreshing the listener and helping to renew them spiritually.
6: Heavenly Father
This song serves as a big reminder for me. The slow beat causes the listener to really listen to the words. Cheri sings that we need to tell God we love him. Basically, she seems to be reminding us to pray. Always.
7: We All Need Jesus
The title pretty much explains the song. She sings about how we need Jesus in our lives. This is one that I generally do not hear though - I tend to miss the 6th or 7th songs when listening to CD's.
8: Beautiful Little Girl
This song is a tribute to her daughter, Sarah. But it is a great song for mothers in that it talks about the mother's longing to raise her daughter "into a woman who loves her maker". Raising a child spiritually can be hard, and this song expresses a mother's desire for her daughter's spiritual growth and learning.
9: The Love Of God
Again, I usually miss this song. But is a mix of pop and gospel type music.
10: In Remembrance Of Me
This song is one of my favorites. It begins "This is my body, Broken for you. This is the cup that holds the wine, Of the new covenant..." It really brings meaning to the act of communion, and may even help the mood if used in a service. When listening to it on the CD, it helps me to put into perspective what these items really mean, and how the represent my eternal life in Christ. It is a slower song, but it is so powerful!
I highly recommend this CD to Christians. It has such powerful lyrics that are both soothing and make you think. Cheri's sweet voice blending with the instrumentals and background vocals are great! If you like artists such as Twila Paris, Crystal Lewis, and Nicole Nordaman, this CD is for you.
