| st3on1ey1baby's Full Review: Zebrahead by Zebrahead |
If you’re a huge Zebrahead fan (and what cool kid isn’t?) then you already know that their self-titled debut album on Dr. Dream Records is out of print and unavailable for sale anywhere other than eBay. If you’re a new fan, you may be suckered into paying $25+ for a Japanese import on eBay titled “Zebrahead – Stupid Fat Americans”, of which sellers proclaim “Features Unreleased Bonus Tracks!” Well, that’s not exactly true because you can find most of those songs on this release, which has come to be known as the Zebrahead Yellow Album.
There are five “unreleased” songs on the Yellow Album that are not on either of their two major releases Waste of Mind or Playmate of the Year. These five songs are reason enough to purchase this album at any price:
All I Need
A hard-rockin’ song featuring Ali’s powerful lyrical mastery and enough heavy guitar riffs to keep your head banging. It’s a shame that many ZH fans haven’t gotten the opportunity to hear this one, because I feel that it’s one of their best songs to date.
Hate
It’s a song with a message to it, so as Mr. T would say: “Listen up, fool.”
Mindtrip
One of Zebrahead’s strong points is having an excellent lead guitarist, and that is made clear in Mindtrip. If you haven’t seen them live, you’re missing out on a great time just watching Greg Bergdorf work his magic on the strings. Certainly there are some bands out there who rock as hard as ZH, but what they lack is the ability to flow so melodiously. I want to ask Greg – how can you be so thin, yet sound so phat?
Crome
What really sets Zebrahead apart from other rap/rock bands is the contrasting style of Justin’s pleasant, soothing lyrics to Ali’s forceful, commanding raps. I could almost compare it to 311’s Nick Hexum and SA Martinez, but SA just doesn’t make one’s spine snap to attention like Ali does when he belts out a rhyme. This is a beautiful song that made its first appearance here, not on “Stupid Fat Americans”. So there.
Song 10
The groovy flavor that infiltrates just about every existing ZH song really stands out in this one. There is always one booty-shaking track on each Zebrahead album, and this is it for the Yellow album. I have no idea what lead singers Ali and Justin “Goldtoof” are rapping about, but the “West-siiide!” chorus is just plain catchy!
The other songs on this album are tracks that found their way onto “Waste of Mind”, but you’d be wrong to think they are the same versions. Jagoff is an early live version which still has that swinging rhythm to it, but is different enough than the later release that you should be checking it out, jah. Check seems to be a faster, tighter, more hard-core version than the one that made it later onto “Waste of Mind”. Plus, Ali breaks it down for us in a different fashion. Walkaway is one of my most favorite songs ever, and that is because of Ali’s dope rhymes over the funky guitar riff in the middle of the song. I have to say that I don’t like this version as much as the later one, but there are different lyrics to this version, so you must hear it. Swing is not as polished as the later release of it, and Bootylicious Vinyl actually sounds…… exactly the same as the later release.
So, now that you know how great this album is, you are out of luck since you can’t really find it very easily. Too bad!
