TRACY BONHAM: DOWN HERE
As follow-ups go, it's give or take. Too often artists that make a strong debut come across as a bit "lost" on their second records, but thankfully Tracy Bonham has avoided the pitfalls of The Sophomore Slump.
The twelve songs on this stellar disc are exquisitely crafted girl-pop, with emphasis on the grrrrrrr. Though she leaves the snarling to the Courtney Loves of the world, Bonham can seethe with the best of them, but, like peer Liz Phair, she does it with a knowing wink. The production and arrangement is expansive without being overcooked, and the catchy melodies that pervade Bonham's music are entirely hummable.
The single "Every Good Woman" is just one of the smart offerings you'll find here, but don't stop there. "You Don't Know Me" works up enough estrogen power to keep men groveling, while "Jumping Bean" just plain rocks. "This damn horse won't buck for you anymore/These lips won't suck for you anymore," she sings to a lover she's giving the kiss-off to, refusing to be his plaything. "Fake It" has the power chords of Joan Jett or Hole, and the lovely "Second Wind" finds Bonham playing it soft for a rare moment of introspection.
The hooks are plenty, the writing is snappy and Bonham is at the top of her form. Though there are still those who would refer to Bonham's brand of art "chick music," this is a collection of songs that deserves widespread appreciation.
