Gangsta Rap died a while ago.... (Reply to this comment)
by csmith75
Loved the review, but I just wanted to comment on your gangsta rap comment. Gangsta rap died years ago. The majority of the rappers today rap about crap, but it's not gangsta rap crap.
Rap today consists of materialism and women (i.e. Jay-Z, Cash Money, Ludacris), party songs (anything by P-Diddy and his brethren, Busta Rhymes), or nonsensical trash (Ying Yang Twins). Some rappers fall into the conscious categories (Common and occasionally Wu-Tang, Nas), and others fall under other categories.
I really can't think of any major rappers who still fall under the category of gangsta rap.

Gangsta Rap Is Still Alive? (Reply to this comment)
by cletta1201
Maybe I'm just missing out on something, but "gangsta rap" is dead and has been dead for quite sometime. I think the whole hip-hop world has taken a turn for the male battle type rap, even the most popular ones are keeping the battle alive (Jay-Z vs Nas). There's also plenty of conscious rappers out there getting there due like Dilated Peoples, Black-Eyed Peas, Common, Mos Def, the list goes on. I think Bubba is going to be more than just a country rapper, but I don't think that it's due to his unique style, I think it will be because he has Timberland as a producer in his corner, and you can't really go to wrong there because people do really listen to what artists have to say, they just want to hear good beats anyways. Interesting review and I gave it a very helpful because I figured that if someone were not knowledgeable in that area (hip-hop) they would benefit greatly. But the Gangsta Rap thing? I think it's been over. Carletta

Well... (Reply to this comment)

...yet another great music review from you. :o) You better start writing more, because I want to personally check your comments on any CD before I buy.
BTW, I see you are a "Glocker" too. Best damn guns on the market. :o) My favorite I own(ed) was a Glock 26 sub-compact 9 mm. When the "concealed handgun" license was approved for Texas years ago, I quickly took the course...the mini-Glock was my first Glock, and always managed to be my favorite. It was a perfect size, easy to clean, dead accurate, and like all Glocks, you can basically run it over with a tank and it'll still fire. I bought a great purse with break-away velcro that housed it, usually the size would only allow for small, feminine 22's to be carried...(but what the heck are you gonna do with a 22 cal except tick someone off?) but with the mini-glock was a perfect fit! So, loaded with a pack of black-talons (hey....I bought 'em legally, darnnit!)I was good to go once the law was passed and my card arrived. Shame I had to sell my guns when I moved here....(Sweden is not a gun-friendly country) but oh well. Nice to see you have good taste in handguns as well as music.
Anyhow...keep the good stuff comin'....I'd tell you you need to write more often, but I'd be a total hypocrite. (Sat on my duff as far as writing is concerned this month).
Best wishes,
Val

I wonder..... (Reply to this comment)
by sslabs
I wonder if anyone is aware of the fact that I have not left a reply or comment on any of my opinions in months?
Anyway, Flame saying "I told you so" would not be the thing to do here because I did that months ago. But people drop me from their WOT all of the time because of my behavior, I'm used to it.
I act like a complete a-s-s when being polite is not working or getting me the attention I need in situations like dsmelly (dkozin). Even though I might be a complete jerk most of the time, I will never lie to anyone here, ever.
Thanks for leaving a comment and saying something that needed to be said, it shows a lot of class.
Mad I know I'm dreaming but I miss the non competitive style late 80s rap. Maybe one day I will get what I want, even if it only lasts for two or three years. I would LOVE to see rap have a "grunge" period where only the deep and thoughtful rap would ever have a chance. Wouldn't that be cool?
Kristina
Listen, you need to keep the babe stuff on the DL, who knows what kind of talkative people are lurking around here. You know the number.
The Michelle Branch review was finished days ago. I never post an opinion right after I finish it. I let it sit and I think about it for awhile. Maybe tomorrow or Friday, and I promise two things, one I will do it justice, and two I won't let you down. Actually, you are so in love with me, I can't really do anything wrong..... I like that ;0)
And rf you get the shaft because I don't really have anything left to say (I think).

Now, where's that review on Michelle Branch?

I didn't know you were going to review this! :)
I had never heard a word about this man until now. And the whole time I was reading, your visual of him in a mustard stained wife beater shirt, kept playing through my head. I think he should get a star or a half star just for going out there and rapping "Southern". Maybe next time out he'll tackle some real issues.
And I'll drink to the death of gangsta rap along with you, even if it's in vain.

If you look at the Billboard charts, mainstream Rock was also alive for only about fifteen or so years (in between the appearence of Elvis and the break-up of The Beatles)....after that, most great Rock bands (from The Sex Pistols to Nirvana) only got moderate chart entries, because Rock wasn't exclusively interested in making hit records anymore.
Maybe the same thing's happening in Hip-Hop- maybe twenty years from now, Jurassic 5 and Common will be regarded as the Velvet Underground or Big Star of their genre.

Excellent review. You're exactly right about the young rap fans embracing gangsta/thug rap. Anyone who listened to rap prior to the 1990s can see that rap is dying now, thanks to stagnation brought about by corporate gangsta rap.
I may check out Bubba Sparxxx later on just to get a feel for his stuff. I think "Ugly" had too much Timbaland influence for me to really get a feel for Sparxxxx.
