Jay-Z Drafts The Blueprint in an Attempt to Return to True Hip Hop (IMDTNTUECDHHOOMWO)
by madtheory | Jan 02 '02
Pros: Good production. Some clever lyrics.
Cons: Short. Jigga's arrogance gets tired after a while. A few disappointing tracks.

Great Review Mad Theory. I agree. Blueprint has about 6 or 7 really good songs, but the rest seems like filler. I like Reasonable Doubt. Have you noticed that most rapper's debut albums are always the best? I mean, look at Nas (Illmatic), DMX (Its Dark...) Jay-Z (Reasonable Doubt), and many others. I guess when they get popular, they forget about what brought them to the game. Even though i personally like all DMX Albums, and some of Nas's albums, and some of Jigga's, their first albums are always the top ones. I like most of Jay-Z's Cds, but Vol. 3, and Roc La Familia are COMPLETE and UTTER Garbage. 1 Star, maybe 1/2 star. Garbage. But he did reclaim himself, SOMEWHAT, on Blueprint. But he needs to go back to his pen and pad to make another "reasonable doubt", or will he ever? Who knows.

bah.. I'm not riding Nas.. Jay is a tight lyricist, but Nas is better when he's not dealing with "jiggy" topics. You really need to go back into Nas' discography to see that. Check his rhymes on Illmatic and It Was Written. Jay-Z has been chasing Nas his entire career, but has been unable to reproduce the substance of Nasir's work. The Blueprint is the closest Jay has come since Reasonable Doubt, and it doesnt hold a candle to Nas first two albums.

I haven't been duped by anything; read my Nas review. When Nas was a sell-out I called him a sell-out. It's just that with Stillmatic he finally found his proper direction. Your boy Jay has been selling out since his career started, and just switched over to the more meaningful stuff to get the acclaim he coughed up with Vol. 3 and The Dynasty. The people who fail to recognize that are the ones who have been fooled. WAKE UP.

Thanks for the comments. Sorry about the laste response but apparantly I turned off my alerts for this.

History is History, no matter pre u owe me or whatever. Nas might have been a "raw" lyricist, like u stated w/ pre u owe me, but "post" u owe me, and "post" oochy wally, he is weak. i don't need to have bought nas's "pre u owe me" cd's to know that much. how about we start judging the "present" nas... and by the way, i have heard illmatic... and it was ill... and ill not meaning tight.

have you even heard Illmatic? Both had histories of being insightful pseudo-political lyricists, both diverged for the advantages of MTV, suburbia, TRL dominance. But raw ability, Nas is way better. If you don't know about Nas' history..and I'm talking about pre-You Owe Me (is that really your argument?), then you'd know that.

Everyone knows that.

I believe your music reviews are very insightful and well researched, but due to your bias's, for Nas, I do believe you are giving Jay-Z a much more superficial image then what he really is.
You claim that Jay's songs aren't in depth and are only cool to listen to be they're catchy and have "chick shingles"; however, when did Nas become such a prolific and thought provoking song writer either. "Oochy Wally"... remember that one. it was such a lovely song wasn't it, and wasn't written not too long ago. i felt like throwing up every time i heard that weak song, and the video, straight up porn! So now that Nas is rapping about, fake, plastic, and insecure women, and how he feels for them and wants to raise some sort of awareness or whatever, we suddenly are supposed to believe that nas has always thought this way? I find him quite contradicting in all honesty! And "U owe me", u didn't find that song at all a bit commercialized? If you ride my jock u can hold my Pt... very uplifting is it not? Are we supposed to forget that man and lyricist nas, not too long ago, used to be, just because he fronts a new image for Stillmatic? Sht I'm not fooled!
Now i'm not claiming Jay-z is any better with his sudden new image from "money cash hoes" and "jigga what jigga who" to songs like the excellent "heart of the city" and "song cry". but i am claiming that Jay's new work does not completely contradict the stuff he put out in the past. comparing "big pimping" to "song cry" u can see Jay has a new maturity, but he doesn't go dissing pimps and how young black men "live it up".
lets really be honest; is nas even in the same league as Jay-z to be compared w/ for best lyricist? I don't think so! it's like comparing brittney spears to jessica simpson; brittney sells more albums,so does Jay, she's more popular, and he is as well, Jessica wishes she was as popular as Brittney while Nas puts himself in the "underground" category because he can't get enough people to buy his records... Jessica, she has a hit here or there, nas... got ur self a... was horrible...im sure u get the point by now.
Blueprint is much better then stillmatic. Blueprint shows artistic growth while stillmatic is straight up ill with it's bull sh*t political statements. Coming from some one who listens to real music like dilated peoples, im quite disappointed you were so easily duped...
Nevertheless, your review was great, but.... Jay-Z's still king of hip hop!!!!!

Thanks. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that the Source had given it 5. The rest of their ratings are usually all over the map, but they generally take the 5 mic rating seriously.

To be honest, I don't think that Stillmatic deserved 5 either, but if Blueprint got 5, Stillmatic deserves 6.

I've been waitiing for you to review this because I knew you were the only person who would see The Blueprint for what it really is...just average. I was buggin when I saw that The Source gave it 5 mics. But I quickly gave that up when I remembered how they gave Biggie 5 mics just because he had died. (And they even admitted it in another issue...).

Great review that manages to still respect Jay's skills without being unnecessarily in awe of them.

"H to the izz-O, V to the izz-A
Fo' shizzle my nizzle used to dribble down in VA
Was herbin' em in the home of the Terrapins
Got it dirt cheap for them
Plus if they was short wit' cheese I would work wit' them
Boy and we...got rid of that dirt for them
Wasn't born hustlers I was burpin' em
H to the izz-O, V to the izz-A
Fo' sheezy my neezy keep my arms so freezy
Can't leave rap alone the game needs me
Haters want me clapped and chromed it ain't easy
Cops wanna knock me, D.A. wanna box me in
But somehow, I beat them charges like Rocky
H to the izz-O, V to the izz-A
Not guilty, he who does not feel me is not real to me
Therefore he doesn't exist
So poof...vamoose son of a b*tch

[CHORUS]

Holla at me...
I do this for my culture
To let 'em know what a ni**a look like...when a ni**a in a roaster
Show 'em how to move in a room full 'o vultures
Industry shady it need to be taken over
Label owners hate me I'm raisin' the status quo up
I'm overchargin' ni**az for what they did to the Cold Crush
Pay us like you owe us for all the years that you hold us
We can talk, but money talks so talk mo' bucks

[CHORUS]

Yeah...
Hov is back, life stories told through rap
Ni**az actin' like I sold you crack
Like I told you sell drugs...no...
Hove did that so hopefully you won't have to go through that
I was raised in the pro-jects, roaches and rats
Smokers out back, sellin' they mama's sofa
Lookouts on the corner, focused on the ave
Ladies in the window, focused on the kinfolk
Me under a lamp post, why I got my hand closed?
Cracks in my palm, watchin' the long arm o' the law
So you know I seen it all before
I seen hoop dreams deflate like a true fiend's weight
To try and to fail, the two things I hate
Succeed in this rap game, the two things is great
H to the izz-O, V to the izz-A
What else can I say about dude, I gets bizzay"

-----------------------------

Let's see... 'I've got this rap game on lock, I used to sell drugs in the PJs, people don't want me to succeed, yadda yadda...' Doesn't sound that much different than what he's been spitting on the last 2-3 albums...-mad

REALLY good point dvon. as hip-hop lovers how can you really punish someone for wanting to be successful or share their talent? if all he's doing is drawing them in with the hook and beats, and they don't listen, its their loss...they don't love the music like some of us do :-)

If You Listen To The Lyrics... (Reply to this comment)

On Izzo (H.O.V.A), its a sincere track that is basically his life story. But the beat behind it is the selling point. I will admit, that the beat is radio-friendly, but the lyrics and subject matter deviate than his other tracks that are heard on radio stations and what-not.

Nas finally shut Jigga up.... (Reply to this comment)

I'm firmly on the side of Nas. I was really impressed with Stillmatic, even though The Blueprint was good.
Jigga is just too damm arrogant for me - i'm so glad Nas destroyed him on Ether.

And 2001 was a bad year for hip-hop, i agree.

Great review

And put me down as being in agreement about Jay-Z being generally vastly overrated. I lump him in the same category as Ras Kass, DMX, and Snoop Dogg - MCs who would dominate, if only they would elevate.

And as much as I thought Biggie was pretty good, I insist that no one ever knocked Rakim off of the throne - he had to effectively abdicate it (by releasing two sub-par albums) before KRS-One could take his place. And Nas, Jay-Z, and so on could never hope to make it past the GZA's swinging blade, let alone actually lay claim to the Blastmaster's throne.

BTW, I'll give Rolling Stone this much grudging credit. They handed De La Soul's "Bionix" a four star rating, which is in perfect agreement with my soon-to-come assessment of it. I was stunned that they got something right.

I can see that. I had to listen to Blueprint over and over again to make sure I wasn't giving it an extra star. I really like Stillmatic though. If Nas had Jigga's money it would have been a much tighter album.

I found both the Blueprint and Stillmatic to be average. I'm glad I didn't buy them. They weren't the type of albums I could see myself listening to more than a couple times. Both Spin and Rolling Stone pretty much climbed up Jay Z's a*s. They called the Blueprint the hip-hop album of the year.
