Sarah,
Oh yes, Jesse Martin is one sexy bastard, I'm telling you (and of course, that fact that he plays gay here is a special bonus for yours truly). At any rate, it's good to know that I'm not the only one who fears the worst with this movie. But I'm trying to give it the benefit of the doubt...
We'll see, boys.

You captured everything I adore AND cringe at about Rent (haaaatte Roger & that stupid Your Eyes song). I WANT the movie to be amazing, and yet all signs point to...blah. The preview was underwhelming, having much of that "overproduced" feel you talk about in the soundtrack. How do you duplicate such a made-for-theater show on the silver screen? Then again, I will always swoon for Jesse Martin's Collins - that alone is probably enough to get me to the movies. But if they left out the Christmas Bells are Ringing numbers, I think I'll pass on the soundtrack...
Thanks for a GREAT review!

Oh, Andrew, Andrew, Andrew...
You really do need to see the stage show, at least once. Any old touring company will do. And your kids are probably sophisticated enough to handle it. Seriously.

I...I still haven't seen this show.
How am I supposed to hang with the cool theatre crowd having never seen Rent?
But I sang in the pit for a run of Grease over several hot summer nights...does that count?

Yeah. Milquetoast would definitely come to mind about him. That said, the stupid Disney show I saw earlier this year or last year was some crap with songs through the years. There were like sixty of them. It was horrible.

Unless the stupid Disney show you saw last time was "The Lion King" (which, confounding all my expectations, was absolutely breathtaking), "Rent" is way, WAY better than the stupid Disney show you saw last time.
I'm also interested to see how well the movie does with the material. There's a lot of potential for edgy, gritty visuals in the original show; but I'm afraid with Chris Columbus at the helm that it's going to be a little milquetoasty.

desperately want to see this show on stage. Screw your ambivalence--it's gotta be better than the stupid Disney show I saw last time. Gack.
Great review. I'm interested to see how well the movie does.
