wiccyblackcat's Full Review: God [Maxi Single] by Tori Amos
God is one of my favourite singles of Tori Amos'. God as a song was one of my favourite songs on the album "Under The Pink", so i decided to get the single when i saw it.
It starts off with the single "God". The only problem with this is, it would be nice if the single wasn't *exactly* the same as it is on the album. If you've listened to the album enough times (*cough*) like me, you probably won't enjoy the song just as much. If you're new to Tori, and more into the style of "Girl and Piano" with the occasional funked up Guitar, this would be the single to buy. I think everybody can relate to the sings Tori says to God, and about the Christian God in the song. "God sometimes you just don't come through - Do you need a woman to look after you"... "I gotta find what you're doing about things here"... "I gotta find why you always go when the wind blows" and finally "Will you even tell her if you decide to make the sky fall?!"..
Even the most faithful Christian has had these doubts, i would say. "It's all part of the grand plan" These people say. Yeah, i'm sure the best people getting murdered, and harmed is? "God heals all wounds" They also say. Yeah, well a lot of us have been waiting around a long time for the Christian God to heal our wounds, but we've gone out and done it for ourselves..
Onto the next song. Home On The Range: The Cherokee Edition. Is truly a beautiful song. It shows Tori's amazing piano skills, and beautiful yet powerful voice. This is not the traditional version of Home On The Range. Tori, drawing on the memory of her Cherokee Grandfather and ancestors, wrote the song, telling the story of both the white people, AND The indians' whose land was stolen. Inbetween the verses of the traditional one, she adds her own verses.
"well Jackson made deals, a thief down to his heels
hello trail of tears
the Smokies could hide a Cherokee bride,
her brave was shot yesterday "
"your home is my home
the range may be fine for some but not in my eyes"
"Oh Who Discovered Your As*"...
A very powerful song, you can hear Tori's conviction and emotion coming through. With both the strength to stand up for the Indians, as well as the sadness and pain that they felt for being taken over.
Next up, we have the Piano Suite. Oh my goodness. When i first started listening to Tori, i listened to her for her powerfully moving lyrics, as well as her wonderful voice and use of it. And to be honest, i didn't even particularly like the piano until i heard Tori play it.
The first song in the Piano Suite is "All The Girls Hate her". Geez. Tori manages to put her emotions through that piano so much, that you can understand the song without needing the words. The song starts out as the girl is upset about what they feel, with a bit of a sad tone. But as the song builds, and gets prettier, a new strength forms. Self-Esteem. She can be powerful and know that she doesn't *need* the other girls to like her. She's rising above them and realizing that she's wonderful the way she is. This is a girl that's secure in herself, wonderful, happy, and generous. All the other girls are simply jealous of her. But the girl doesn't care. She doesn't need their approval. She can shine anyway.
The next Piano piece is called "Over It".. This song is a bit short i think, to be able to get a complete feel for it. It shows Tori's amazing piano playing skills, with her light, springing hands telling the story beautifully. Over it starts quite busily, with a lot of things going on. Once again, the song builds power, winding up, and feeling a bit sad while once again getting powerful and being secure in herself. It starts to wind down, slowly, but still with springiness. I guess the girl is raving, ranting, and being upset and confused about whats happening through the middle of the song, but coming to terms with it and moving on in the end. She can let herself cry, get out her big umbrella, and move on.
Overall, a soft, calming, beautiful CD, showing both Tori's wonderful vocal skills, emotion, and her special pianist abilities. Very relaxing yet powerful. But, Over it is a bit too short.
