Various music album compilations are becoming more and more popular; just look at Now thats What I Call [insert whatever you want here]. These albums sell millions of copies even though the purchasers probably already own the albums of at least have of the artists. So it comes as no surprise that Christian music has gone the way of the compilation discs as well.
X 2007 is a collection of the most popular songs in the Christian Rock / Alternative music genre for 2007. However, that does not mean that these songs only came out in 2007, but the majority did. The problem with compilation albums is the hit or miss layout. For the most part you are either going to like the songs or not; there really isnt any medium ground.
*** What I Like ***
On X 2007 there are a total of nine songs that I cant seem to get enough of. They are Flights by Falling Up, Awake by Seventh Day Slumber, Fly by Sanctus Real, Rebirthing by Skillet, Writing on the Walls by Underoath, Undying by Demon Hunter, Studying Politics by Josh Head, Role Modeling by MxPx, and Invisible Hook by House of Heroes..
If you have read some of my other previous music reviews on Demon Hunter, Pillar, Extol, or Seventh Day Slumber then you will understand that I prefer music that is highly aggressive, loud, and obnoxious at times. Awake, Rebirthing, and Undying would most definitely fit that description. Awake is not a screamer song, which by screamer I mean that most of the lyrics are screamed at you instead of sang. Rebirthing starts to scream at you at times, and undying is more of a growling type scream, just barely touching on deep metal roots. Waiting on the Walls by Underoath is the only real screamer type song on here, and they do just that, scream at you, but that is Underoaths primary sound.
Studying Politics, Role Modeling, and Invisible Hook are some of the others that I prefer to listen to. Studying Politics is just a very choppy song with a catchy beat / riff. Role Modeling reminds me of something that Fall Out Boy might sing. The music and the vocals sound very close to some of their work.
There are of course songs that I like on this album that have not been listed, but I dont like them so much that I could divulge any useful information for you.
*** What I Dont Like ***
However, on X 2007 there are a total of seven songs that I just skip over almost every time they come on. They are Go by Newsboys, Tonight by Jeremy Camp, Somewhere in the Sky by Kutless, Resolute by Thousand Foot Krutch, Blaze of Glory by Audio Adrenaline, Do Not Move by David Crowder, and Open Wide by Future of Forestry.
Over the years, I have developed a dislike for the Newsboys. I just have never been able to make myself like their younger sound. Their lyrics may be great, but I cannot listen to them for nearly any amount of time. Another song that I skip of is Jeremy Camps song Tonight. This is a rarity as I do like a lot of Jeremy Camps work. I guess the main reason that I skip over this is that is slows the album down, and Im really just wanting an album loaded with energy.
Generally Kutless and Thousand Foot Krutch have fast songs with tons of energy and enthusiasm, but they slacked on these songs. Yes I know they didnt have a say in which songs were included on this album, but I wish whoever put this together would have left these songs for the albums they were written for.
Some new names that I now probably wont give much credence to would be David Crowder and Future of Forestry. These were bonus tracks on this album, but yet again, they were slow and not really a good example of the Christian talent in the Christian Alternative / Rock / Metal genre.
*** Final Say ***
As stated before, compilation albums are generally a hit or miss attempt. The fact that this album hit on nine of twenty-one songs is not bad. Especially consider I only dislike seven of those twenty-one. Interestingly enough I could care less about the lyrics, as these groups really did not focus on too much praise in the songs, well except for the slower bands. I do like this album, but not for the praise aspect; I like it for the energy that it gives off and the fact that I didnt have to go out and buy every single album to get a fairly comprehensive view of the Christian Rock scene for 2007.
