While not a movie for everyone and certainly not for those expecting to see a typical Disney movie, Fantasia 2000 is an experience not to be missed. A treat for the senses.....it is rare to see a film that you enjoy listening to as much as watching.
We are a family that loves classical music. While we don't listen to it on a daily basis, it is played frequently in our home. Still, I took my 4 year old daughter to see the movie with some reservation. Would she be bored? Frightened? While there was one frightening moment for her, she absolutely loved the movie and talked about her favorite parts afterwards. She was never bored....simply mesmerized by the sights and sounds.
I loved the introductions to each segment by notable stars such as Bette Midler, Steve Martin, Penn and Teller.
I loved hearing several familiar pieces played in their entirety. We live in a society where often our only exposure to classical music is in 30 second commercial spots. The Pomp and Circumstance segment with Donald and Daisy Duck was one of my favorites. Although for pure enchantment, the Steadfast Tin Soldier won my heart as well as my daughters.
If you hated the original Fantasia or dislike classical music, don't bother to see this one. You'll hate it too. It is not an adult only film, however, it is not for all children either. There were several children in the audience when I saw the film. Most were over the age of 8, although there were a few younger, including an infant. The baby cried through much of the film, but for the most part, the majority of the children appeared to be mesmerized by what they were watching. The children did not speak except to point at the film at various places and comment about what they were watching. Do not take a child under 8 unless they have a long attention span and can sit through a 1 hour and 21 minute movie without fussing.
