While I realize there are much better Disney masterpieces, Disney's Lady and the Tramp easily ranks third in my list of favorite Disney movies, right below Bambi and The Fox and the Hound. But if you asked me which Disney movie I admire the most, I would quickly say Lady and the Tramp. I hold Lady and the Tramp above all other Disney movies, nay, above all other animated movies ever created. Why? Because I sincerely think this is Disney's most mature, most formula free movie ever. This is perhaps the one, the only Disney movie that doesn't try to be like a Disney movie. While there are many great Disney movies, Lady and the Tramp is one of the few Disney movies that has the least amount of magic but is quite easily Disney's most magical ever.
Lady and the Tramp tells the story of a young puppy named Lady, who is given as a gift for Christmas. She lives a happy life with her masters Jim Dear and Darling and grows up to be a charming young adult. Along the way, she makes two friends, Jock and Trusty, and settles into a routine with Jim Dear and Darling. But suddenly, this routine is upset for no apparent reason, and Lady is left hurt and confused. Luckily, Jock and Trusty are there for the inexperienced Lady, and they tell her that Jim Dear and Darling are having a baby. Lady is relieved and pleased, but now she's curious. She wants to know what a baby is. Meanwhile, a stranger enters Lady's life. The Tramp. He tells Lady wild stories about how a dog's life will change for the worse when a baby moves in. Jock and Trusty don't believe a word of it, but Lady has no idea of the troubles that await her. With a baby on the way and this rough-around-the-edges but strangely lovable stranger in her life, Lady quickly gets caught in the middle of one of Disney's most romantic adventures ever.
One of the things I love about Lady and the Tramp is how compelling the characters are. They are instantly endearing and very believable. Even at the classic age, Disney could've easily resorted to creating the standard good guys and bad guys or some other kind of perfect, cookie cutter character. Yet they didn't. They created people to fill in a world. And what a world it is. When I look at all the other Disney movies, even some of the greats, I notice how sophisticated Lady and the Tramp looks. The other Disney movies may have emotionally engaging movies, yet even in their greatness, they still look cartoony. Not so with Lady and the Tramp. You won't find that Disney needed to cram big musical numbers with this movie. You probably won't even miss them. I certainly didn't. What songs this movie has are short but memorable.
Yet despite this sophistication, Lady and the Tramp still features a movie kids and adults alike will understand and love. Lady and the Tramp features universal themes and a lot of great scenes. Who could forget the scene where Lady and Tramp share a dish of spaghetti? Very romantic. I always feel something when I hear that famous song Bella Notte. But very few people notice another favorite song of mine, and that's the song that features at the very beginning. What other Disney movie could you find the words "Peace my children"? Lots of great stuff like this make this one of Disney's most special movies.
Finally, there's the animation. While Lady and the Tramp isn't as stylized as Bambi and doesn't have the razzle dazzle of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs or Beauty and the Beast, I find that the animation is still incredible, even by today's standards. In addition to realistic characters, Lady and the Tramp features realistic, vibrant, and flowing animation. Way before the days of commercialism, Disney put extra care into their production to create a wonderful and colorful and almost classy world. Pay special attention to the part where Tramp describes the wonderful experiences a dog might have free in the wide world and you'll see what I mean. I also take comfort knowing that this movie was created way before the age of computers.
Overall, I think there's nothing to hate about Lady and the Tramp. I love its characters. I love its romance. I love its sophistication. I love its story. I love the fact that Disney took extra care with it and released it in both DVD and widescreen DVD. That alone says something. It is timeless and a welcome addition to any Disney or even animation lover's collection.
