We have all had that thought. If I knew then what I know now, what would I change about my life? In "Peggy Sue Got Married", Kathleen Turner gets the chance of a lifetime.
Kathleen portrays Peggy Sue Bodell, a mother and a bakery owner, who is in the process of getting a divorce from her husband of 25 years, who was also her high school sweetheart. Peggy Sue's life isn't bad, but it isn't the one she envisioned for herself when she was a teenager.
She attends her 25th high school reunion, and during the festivities, she faints. When she wakes up, she is still in gym where her reunion was being held, but now there is a big difference. It isn't 1985. She finds herself back in the spring of 1960, a high school senior with only a few weeks left until graduation.
Peggy Sue doesn't understand what happened or how to explain the fact that she is 18 again, and about to make decisions that will affect the rest of her life.
Nicholas Cage plays Charlie, Peggy Sue's husband/high school boyfriend. This casting was one of the low spots of the movie, simply because Nicholas talks with this nasal twang that makes me wonder what Peggy Sue saw in him to begin with.
She breaks up with him, explaining that she is trying to prevent years of heartbreak and that she knows what will happen if they get married. He doesn't understand and thinks that Peggy Sue simply doesn't love him anymore.
Her friends think she has lost her mind, but she can't make them understand the experience that she has already had, nor realize that she knows how her life will be. All Peggy Sue wants to do is make sure that the story has a happy ending.
The film also has funny moments. In one scene, Peggy Sue gets frustrated and decides to "go to England and discover the Beatles." She laughs when her father comes home with a new car-an Edsel. When her girlfriends drop her off at home, they say they will call her later. Peggy Sue says "Yes, let's keep in touch.”
There are also some bittersweet scenes that are touching. Watching Peggy Sue get upset when she answers the telephone and finds the person on the other end is her beloved grandmother, who passed away after Peggy Sue graduated from high school. Peggy Sue later visits her grandparents, who understand what she is going through. They offer her advice about her life and help Peggy Sue make a decision about how her life will be.
One thing I didn't like about the film was the gaps that are not filled in. The end credits list Peggy Sue's son Scott, but he is never shown in the movie. You also don't know if Peggy Sue's parents are still living. Peggy Sue sometimes seemed lost. She knew what happened to one friend, but seemed mystified as to other things, like when her grandmother would die.
I do think that Kathleen Turner, who was nominated for a best actress Oscar in this role, gave an excellent performance as Peggy Sue, going from adult to teenager, trying to figure out how her life will turn out.
Look for some of today's stars in minor roles in the film. Helen Hunt plays Beth, Peggy Sue's daughter. Also featured in the movie are Joan Allen and Jim Carrey as Peggy Sue's friends from high school and an excellent performance by Maureen O'Sullivan (Mia Farrow's mother) as Peggy Sue's grandmother.
