“Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn!” Oop’s, right actor, wrong movie! If you saw the recent submarine movie U-571 and enjoyed the battle scenes that were in that picture then you might find the 1958 war adventure Run Silent, Run Deep to be equally appealing. I am actually stunned that I am going to be the first one to review this movie for Epinions.
Run Silent, Run Deep stars Burt Lancaster and Clark Gable as two Naval submarine officers that dislike each other with a passion but are forced to serve on the same submarine together during World War II. Military protocol dictates that Commander Richardson (Gable) and Lt. Bledsoe (Lancaster) follow orders and serve together but that doesn’t mean they have to like it, and neither of them do.
Richardson has a heavy chip on his shoulder after losing his last command to a Japanese Destroyer that causes overflowing tensions on his new ship. When he breaks Navy orders to go after the Destroyer that sank his old sub things really begin to heat up inside his new command.
Unlike the newer U-571, Run Silent, Run Deep didn’t use special effects during the battle scenes instead relying on sheer dread of what may happen to the members of the subs crew at any moment. In Run Silent, Run Deep the fear of depth charges seems so much more threatening than in U-571 that no matter how many times that I have seen this movie I am always on the edge of my seat.
One of the more intense scenes in Run Silent, Run Deep involves a tactical game of life or death cat and mouse with a Japanese submarine. I am always fascinated by the way this scene unfolds as each Captain maneuvers his sub in an attempt to torpedo the other. During this scene you can feel the tension in both crews as they await the outcome of their Captain’s decisions, which for Richardson include laying his submarine and crew on the ocean floor as the Japanese submarine silently passes over the top of them.
Lancaster and Gable are fantastic in this movie and I highly recommend Run Silent, Run Deep as a realistic look into the perils of submarine warfare that will thrill you as well as entertain you. If you are a Gable or Lancaster fan or even a submarine movie fan then Run Silent, Run Deep is one movie that is a must for your collection.
