Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
I've always been a big Nicolas Cage fan. He's not what you would call classically handsome, but he has this boyish quirkiness that is just flat irresistable. There are very few of his movies that I would say make me want to reach out and slap him, but Honeymoon in Vegas is definitely one. don't get me wrong, I love this movie.... it's the idiocy of men fighting marriage every step of the way that irks me. heh. Hey, I'm a chick, sue me.
So what we have here is Cage in a long term relationship with his gal, Sarah Jessica Parker. He's promised his dying mother that he'll never marry (like he needs an excuse..) and Parker is just not going to wait a moment longer. They get to Vegas and Cage just keeps finding excuses to prolong the ceremony... like a poker game he simply must get in on.
Well, he ends up losing the gal in the poker game to James Caan and all hell begins to break lose. What ensues is a very fun roller coaster of a ride. Cage has to jump through hoops to win the girl back, including dressing up as Elvis and jumping out of a plane.
Elvises, light your fires.
Outlandish? Unlikely? Yes and yes... but damn is it fun anyway.
While not his best movie by far, this is nonetheless Cage's best part in my eyes... aside for the fake vampire gig in Vampire's Kiss, of course.... well alright I think Raising Arizona goes without saying. Here he's just this nice guy who makes a series of bad decisions while having the best of intentions, really. You know he is going to marry the girl, he just needs a bit of a nudge (or a jack hammer to the head...)
Parker is probably best known for her HBO series Sex in the City, but I personally liked her best in Mars Attacks! She looks so cute and innocent here. How could Cage even think of not sweeping her up immediately and marrying her? Does she not instill the natural male urge to own and protect? (ok you libbers, bite me)
Well, James Caan wants to marry her right off the bat alright. Let this be a lesson... marry it or lose it! You may not appreciate what you have, but rest assured someone else will. heh. Caan is his usual suave, charming self and turns it up full bore to win the girl. Looks like he'd be the best choice, being all rich and stuff and so gentlemanly, eh? All is not as it seems at first though and ol' Jimmy has a dark temper... but enough plot has been given up already so no more for you!
Suffice it to say that it is predictable as hell, but you won't care a bit because the damn thing is just too fun to watch. You'll know where they end up, but watch how they get there.
This one runs 96 delightful minutes and had a PG-13 rating in the US, mainly for Parker's skimpy costume at the end I'm thinking... no worries. Plenty of fun for everyone in this, although adults will relate to it better than kids.
This is a 'must own' for any fan of Nicolas Cage or comedy buff.. and a good one to show that male that's dragging his feet. heh. Highly recommended, 5 stars worth of fun.
