Imagine what you would do if you replaced the President.
Dave, played by Kevin Kline, is an employment councilor that happens to bear a fair resemblance to the President, also played by Kevin Kline. Because of this he often impersonates the President at local ribbon cutting ceremonies.
Then the President has a stroke, and the Secret Service and his advisors do not want the country or the Vice President to know about it, because the President’s advisors have been the ones actually running the country.
So the Secret Service come and pick up Dave and fill him in on the situation while also grooming him and applying cosmetic touches so that he really looks like the President.
Dave soon finds that the President is not exactly the kind of man he thought he was. He notices that the advisors are the ones that are telling the President what decisions he should make, and Dave does not like this.
What the President’s advisors do not count on is that Dave has his own ideas about how the country should be run. He soon promises to implement a workfare program where the government will guarantee a job for everyone that wants one, and even brings in his OWN accountant so he can create a budget that will allow for funding for a children’s home for orphans.
Dave finds out that the Vice-President is being blamed for some illegal activities that he did not do. He does not realize this until the VP comes back from a trip he was sent on to Africa and complains to whom he thinks is the President. Dave then sits down with the VP to learn more about him and to find out what kind of man he is.
Of course, his Chief-of-Staff, Bob Alexander, played by Frank Langella, does not appreciate this, so he starts spreading around rumors that the President was involved in some political misdealings.
Well, Dave eventually makes a speech as the President admitting to the misdealings, but also tells how Bob Alexander was also involved, making Alexander look like a fool, and lose all credibility.
Although the plot of this movie is a bit far-fetched, I think that is actually what makes it so good. I wish that all politicians were a bit more like Dave and actually SHOWED that they care about the people in this country.
