It is very sad when a society emits hoopla in such a vast and ignorant sense as what was created during the theater release months of Titanic. For a movie as anticipated as this one, you would think one would have enough sense to see it on the exact opening night, or else totally shut out comments made on the movie until seeing it, in order to get a non-biased opinion. But to avoid going off on a passionate tangent on the subject of rumoring, I will talk about the movie.
For months, I had heard about the movie, saw the trailers, and waited as the release date was pushed back from the summer, to October, to November, and then finally, to December 19th. First of all, whoever does trailers for movies- especially the ones for Titanic, is brilliant. I believe that is the MOST important thing when making a movie. If you want to sell it, make a good trailer. If you need a lesson in how, watch the Titanic trailer, watch the audience's reactions during it.
The plot... It was predictable, yes. Do you not realize how many movies you have seen that you said were good and who's plots you knew about going into the theater? The ship sinks. Even if the trailer didn't give that away, it would've gotten out- it happened in real life. People would've picked up the facts. It is stupid to lessen expectations on a movie because of stupid things like this. Almost every trailer today gives away the plot AND the good lines. Titanic had so much more beyond that to offer.
The screenplay... James Cameron comes out of nowhere it seems to write a screenplay in such a way the audience can relate to the main characters (who are fictional, consequently) and wrap them into the main event. If you didn't think this worked, did you listen to the amount of sniffing going on when it is realized that Jack drowned? It worked. A love story is always refreshing from time to time. Besides that, there are so many subplots to watch, and it makes the ending all the more compelling and astonishing. You realize each person on the real Titanic really did have a story as they went down. Can you blame Cameron for going all-out to make the main story known? As for the subplot in which the ship captain is trying to get rich finding the heart of the ocean, that is a story becoming reality as I type. (Divers are now searching the ship for a collection of diamonds believed to have been left when it sank, as per CNNHN.)
The actors.... The casting is exceptional. I could not believe the choice of each character- including the supporting actors and on. My favorites are those played by Billy Zane, Rose's mother, the ship's engineer, the captain, the character, Mr. Ismay, and of course.. Kathy Bates. Billy Zane adapted the character with such ease and grace. Where is he now? Why aren't scripts being written like crazy with characters to display his ability? It makes you want to write your own. (hmm)
The cinematography, sets, etc.. Unbelievable. The best, most awesome scene of the movie is the shot of Rose getting off the car, raising her head, and taking in the sight of the ship. Cameron is brilliant for implementing that shot into the movie. There are many remarkable moments like this throughout it. That's one of the things that made it an epic. If only we could have more like this one.
It wasn't the PERFECT movie, through and through. But what would be one? Give people a break. I will give a strong opinion.. how any one person can not recommend this movie to someone else, or say it wasn't worth it is beyond me. It is an amazing story about humanity, ourselves, a true event in our history. Movies are the BEST way, I'm convinced, to show these things. You submerse yourself in a large dark auditorium, with a huge visual in front, sound coming from almost a 360 degree circle around you, and quiet. (Unless idiots are chewing outloud or crinkling that paper- that is very annoying, people, by the way.) You are able to totally take in what is progressing before your eyes. And, unlike classrooms, people GO. They flock to the movie theater. It's entertainment. It's the way to tell a story like Titanic. Tell me you didn't remember noticing those moments when seeing this movie. Tell me you felt like each minute of the 3 and 1/2 hours that went by felt like forever..each time you saw it. You didn't even notice the length. Since the Titanic/Good Will Hunting/As Good As It Gets season occured, box office sales have sky-rocketed. Go figure.
