The summer of 1998 featured rival blockbusters about the end of the world arriving in the form of a meteor. "Deep Impact" had the benefit of being released first, and was a hand-wringing drama. "Armageddon" is much more of a comedy, sparing us the morality lesson of who lives and who dies. On the other hand, "Armageddon" has a weaker cast and script, making it the slightly inferior of the two.
Of course, if the oncoming meteor could be simply
destroyed by firing a nuclear arsenal at it,
it would make for a very short film. This would
be equivalent to being able to kill the monster
in a horror movie with a handgun. No, the Pentagon
bigwigs decide that an 800 foot hole must be drilled
into the asteroid, and the nuclear bomb placed
inside. This mission requires astronauts trained
as drillers, or, better yet, drillers trained as
astronauts.
Oil wildcatter Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis) is
recommended. But he will only agree to go if
he can bring his crew along with him. This
includes goofy letcher Rockhound (Steve Buscemi),
tubby Max (Ken Hudson Campbell), black bohemoth
'Bear' (Michael Clarke Duncan), and especially
maverick Adonis A.J. Frost (Ben Affleck).
A.J. and Harry don't get along, especially since
they both are fighting for the attention of Harry's
ravishing daughter Grace (Liv Tyler, which
explains the Aerosmith soundtrack). Can
this crew really save the planet? Needless to say,
there are many outer space obstacles to prevent
our boys from completing their mission.
Hit and miss (mostly miss) comic relief from the
cartoonish supporting cast is combined with
intense (although ridiculous) action scenes.
Nominated for four Academy Awards, three technical
ones plus best original song ("I Don't Want to
Miss a Thing"). (50/100)
