The first thing that caught my attention was the tv advertisement with that catchy tune by Clint Mansell. The first time I saw it, I wasn't sure if it was even for a movie. When I found out it was I said, "I have to see that!". So I did.
Pi is a beautifully done movie. It is raw and exciting. It was frustrating watching the main character Max have his episodes. The music made the hellish migraines jump out of the tv and into my head. It is disturbing. It is well researched. And it certainly made me think.
I felt that Pi was similar to The Matrix in theory - both had obscure visions that made you think, but Pi stood out as being just a little more believable. It was realistic, and not just in a visual sense. All the ideas exude realism.
This movie has a David Lynch feel to it, and Pi reminds me of Eraserhead some ways. The main difference is that Eraserhead keeps you interested by visuals and Pi keeps you interested with the concepts.
