The worst thing one can say about a film is that it's boring. At nearly three hours, this movie needed something special to keep an audience's attention. This film has nothing even remotely resembling that.
I love going to see movies. Any genre, any stars. Any chance to go and see a movie is relished. My husband had a few hours to kill and some money. The trailers on TV looked interesting. Why not?
Basically, this film is about a married couple (Cruise and Kidman) and what happens to them when the wife admits having fantasies about another man. Fantasies? The horror! Cruise snivels and wanders around the city. Somehow, he winds up at an orgy. It turns out that the mayor or someone is at this orgy. Somebody follows him and warns him not to tell. He confesses to the wife.
I'm not sure why he winds up at an orgy. He goes to a coffee shop and bumps into an olf friend who says he's the piano player at this orgy and it's probably not a good idea for him to go, but he's having a tiff with his wife, so why not? That isn't made clear or even alluded to. It's impossible to tell why anybody does anything in this film. The character development is nonexistent. At the end, I wondered, "who cares? Who cares that she fantasized about another guy? Who cares that he went to an orgy?". Not caring is almost as bad as being bored.
