Here is my original review of the film when it was still in theaters.
"Our generation has had no Great Depression, no Great War. Our war is spiritual. Our depression is our lives."--Tyler Durden.
Fight Club is not the type of movie you just sit down and watch. It's downloaded into your cerebral cortex. It's an experience. On one hand it can be just good ol' popcorn fun, on the other it's a wake up call to America.
Our narrator, Jack (Norton),has trouble sleeping at nights. He is an Insomniac. This seems to affect his personal and professional life. He goes to a Doctor wanting something to help him. The Doctor gives him some advice, go see people with "real" problems.
So he visits a support group for survivors of testicular cancer. He becomes a "faker", acting like he too has lost his manhood. This is where he meets Bob (Meatloaf). He finds that becoming a grief mop for these poor souls, helps him sleep like a baby nights. So he goes to even more groups taking in everyone's pain and sorrow. He's never slept better.
Then he meets Marla (Carter). She too is a "faker." Unlike Jack however, she goes because it's cheaper then a movie. This ruins everything for Jack. He can no longer sleep nights knowing another "faker" is in the room. Then one day on a plane he meets Tyler Durden (Pitt). This changes his life forever.
Tyler and Jack share a nice beer after Jack's apartment blows up. Before you know it, they are hitting each other. Why? Because Tyler asked Jack to hit him. Tyler hit's Jack. And they both love it. Soon others join, and this is the beginning of a fight club.
Now why would grown men beat each other to pulps, and get satisfaction from it? Is it because these men were denied a war, and they need that primal blood lust? Is it because it's the only thing that makes them feel real in a society of computers and Starbucks? These questions are left for the viewer to answer. "Fight Club" is oozing with fascinating thoughts and ideas. And this is just the first layer to the movie. It's not just about fighting.
When Tyler has the men's and the audience's full attention, he takes fight club up a notch. They start a type of cult, that rebels against society in a guerrilla type fashion. The movie also has a huge twist, that would be a sin to spoil.
The direction is spectacular from start to finish. David Fincher is officially the director for the new millennium. With such movies as, "Se7en" and "The Game," he has been able to create a type of film that hasn't been made since Hitchcock.
Everyone gives a great performance in the film, even Meatloaf! Norton who has been labeled "the finest actor of his generation" doesn't disappoint. Helen Bonham Carter pulls off the task of being extremely foul and nasty, yet at the same time sexy. Without question Pitt steals the show. Brad Pitt has been labeled a "pretty boy" by his naysayers.. But with this role, he's going to plant that image right in the ground! The character of Tyler Durden is one of the best characters of the 90's. And I can't imagine anyone but Pitt playing him.
Politicians this year attacked "Fight Club," calling it violent and immoral. Fight Club is not the most violent film of the year. It's just one of the few movies that proves fighting and violence can have a message. See Fight Club yourself, and you be the judge.
The "Fight Club" dvd is nothing short of amazing. I've worked at Suncoast for almost a year now. Suncoast specializes in selling videos and dvd's. Working there i've come across a lot of cool dvd's. I must say though, "Fight Club" dvd is right now the finest dvd on the market.
The extra features are amazing. Let's first talk about the simple things that make this dvd so perfect. Let's talk about the case of the film. I have never seen such a wonderful case. There are two cases actually, the actual dvd case which is inside of a brown case that is used to hold it. The actual dvd case is beautiful to look at. It has amazing art work on the inside and out. A lot of work went into this. Inside the case you will find an 18 page book. The book goes into the making of the film, some of the tag lines that were used in the reviews, and what the studio thought of the film.
This dvd is a two disk set. Both disks have amazing looking pictures on them. The first disk is the film. There are four commentary tracks on the film. The first one is with the director David Fincher. The second is with Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, Helena Bonham Carter, and David Fincher. The third track is with the author Chuck Palahniuck and Jim Uhls. The fourth is with the people involved with the special effects used in the film. These commentary tracks are all very interesting.
The second disk is loaded with extra features. You have ten or so deleted scenes, with reasons why they were deleted. Some of the scenes are compared to the scenes that were left in the film. A few of the deleted scenes also have the option to watch them from a different angle, a feature that is still rarely used in dvd's.
The second disk is filled with story boards, and concept art that was used in the film. The viewer can also watch the hilarious PSA's that Fincher originally wanted to be used as trailers for the film.
If you loved "Fight Club" like many people do, there is no reason why you should not own this dvd. If you missed "Fight Club" in theaters, and still want to see it dvd is the only way to go. "Fight Club" except no substitutes.
