"Me, Myself & Irene" is the first truly funny film of 2000. It is the kind of movie you are going to need to see more then once, because you are going to miss a good portion of the film laughing out loud. Now before I start I want to set the record straight, I love Farrelly Brother's films. "Dumb And Dumber" that movie is a classic in my opinion. "Kingpin" what a comic masterpiece that was. Then there is "There's Something About Mary", which still makes me laugh when ever I think about it. "Me, Myself & Irene" is classic Farrelly brother humor, but it is a little darker then you might expect.
I'm sure you have heard the premise to the film. Charlie(Jim Carrey) is a cop who has been holding in his anger for way too long. His wife leaves him for a black Dwarf. The whole town thinks he is a joke and a loser. He keeps getting pushed around and around, that is until Charlie becomes Hank(Jim Carrey). Hank is a true comic masterpiece. The things that come out of that guy's mouth are hysterical.
Now I know that plot is simple, and the romantic chemistry is barely there. With this kind of movie, the story comes second. People want to laugh, and that is exactly what this movie does. I haven't laughed this loud in a theater for some time.
The movie has a lot of great gags, and I couldn't live with myself if I told you any of them. That would be like giving away the hair gel joke in "There's Something About Mary".
Jim Carrey has never been better. He is truly the king of comedy. He plays Charlie as a typical nice guy, hell I bet it's Jim Carrey just playing normal Jim Carrey. But when Jim becomes Hank, it is nothing short of amazing. Hank is my favorite Jim Carrey character to date. Even toping his brilliant psycho Chip Douglas from "The Cable Guy".
This is Jim's movie hands down, but a lot of the laughs come from his three black sons. Those kids are great, and they even steal some scenes from Jim. I would like to see them get their own movie, or have some sort of appearance in all Farrelly Brothers.
Renee Zellweger plays her part right. She is a pretty enough girl for Charlie/Hank to swoon over. The movie isn't really made for her, like "There's Something About Mary" was for Cameron Diaz. So Zellweger doesn't really stand out.
Now I loved this movie, and I do believe it will be the funniest film of the summer. I do think a lot of people will not like it however. Some of the humor is mean spirited, and this film is very distasteful. But a lot of people like me, like that. So if you are the type of person who goes to the freak show at the circus to laugh at all the mutants, then you are in for a real treat. And even if you are not that twisted and mean spirited, I think you will be able to enjoy this film. This is a sick twisted beautiful little film.
