_Coyote Ugly_ accomplishes a rare thing: to be both eye candy and a good story. Even more, it has a good message behind it without a single speech or overt moralizing.
First, the eye candy: scantily clad women dancing on a bar, obviously having a great time. Throw in a cute Aussie guy and pretty much everyone will find something enjoyable to look at. It would have been very easy for the movie to stop right there, but for once the eye candy is actually a garnish and not the meat of the film. There's a real story here; a sweet, fairly predictable love story made interesting by the quirks of the particular people involved.
And guess what? Women can be sexy, intelligent, and independent all at the same time, and _Coyote Ugly_ does a wonderful job of showing a world where this is true without bashing you over the head with it.
The biggest problem with the movie is a script that is quite roughly written; there were more than a few lines that came out of nowhere and jerked me out of the flow of the story. On the whole, though, the acting is good enough to cover up the choppy writing.
The second biggest problem has to do with a story that is really too complex to fit into two hours, so many aspects of motivation, character history, and side characters get glossed over.
So it has its flaws; but on the whole, I consider this one of the better movies I've seen this year. At its heart, _Coyote Ugly_ is an uplifting story of a woman overcoming her fears and achieving her dreams.
