Josh_G's Full Review: How the Grinch Stole Christmas
SomeWho Down in Who-ville may like The Grinch a lot... Others will be sad when they are a who who Did NOT! The Grinch rings in the Christmas season, but the film just does not tick for some reason.
Why is this film not great? Why could it meet an evil fate? It could be some of the humor is just not right. It could be, perhaps, that the film never surpasses expectations great in height. But most likely, it is because this films has a heart which is two sizes too small.
But, Whatever the reason, its heart or the humor, It is clear that Ron Howard doesn't know all the clues for creating a happy movie. Instead, it sometimes feels like a film by John Hughes that's sappy and so not groovy.
Jim Carrey plays the anger ridden Grinch. Hating this meanie is cinch. The Who's of Whoville are who the Grinch would like to lynch.
What the Grinch hates the most is Yuletide joy. He does not want to see another Christmas toy! He comes up with one evil, evil ploy. IT IS CHRISTMAS HE MUST DESTROY!
He steals the Who's Christmas Trees! He steals the Whos new skis! He even steals their string cheese! He does this with such ease!
But wait, what is it the Grinch could hear? There was still Christmas cheer. He could see it from up there that Christmas will always come this time of year.
Jim Carrey does look smashing in green. He has a few comic moments that just have to be seen! Other times he seems mean and even obscene. Alas, there is a dog who steals his thunder when it's onscreen.
The rest of the cast is funny. Christine Baranski is the Grinch's love interest and a real honey. Taylor Momsen plays Cindy Lou Who with a smile so sunny. You may think this is enough to pay to see it with your money.
The visuals in this film are pretty nifty so I am sure the studio was thrifty. So even though the film is pretty shifty first weekend it will make one million dollars times fifty.
But, Ron Howard what have you done? This film could have been so much more fun. In the long run it is fun for nearly none.
I just wish that they would remake a classic with care. Doing it like this is kind of unfair. You won't run away from this in despair but it just lacks the proper amount of flair.
I'm not saying that this film is not good. But you won't like it as much as you hoped you would. Or as much as you believed you could. Or as Dr. Suess thought it should.
The timeless celebration of the spirit of the holidays comes home as acclaimed director Ron Howard and Jim Carrey bring Dr. Seuss beloved tale to life...More at Buy.com Marketplaces
