SParkfan77's Full Review: How the Grinch Stole Christmas
I can't believe that it is Christmas again! Every year, a myriad of Christmas movies are played on TVE, and new ones are released into the theaters. This year, Jim Carrey starred in one of the best Christmas movies of all time. It is funny, touching, and will make you cry. Jim Carrey is The Grinch That Stole Christmas. His comedic styles have been in many movies such as Ace Ventura, Liar Liar, and The Mask. In The Grinch, he shows off a new his comedic style of acting, and his soft side that can show compassion and sadness. I enjoyed this movie.
The Grinch
My favorite Christmas movie of all time was by far A Christmas Story. This was of course about a child that wanted a bee bee gun for Christmas. This is a classic Christmas movie, and is played every year on TBS. one of my favorite Christmas movies has always been the animated classic, The Grinch That Stole Christmas. It always got me into the Christmas mood, and it made me appreciate what Christmas is all about (yea right). Seriously, the new version of this movie was remade by Director Ron Howard and was a great remake of the movie. He tried to bring back what the animated version had. He succeeded in doing this. Jim Carrey makes this movie watch able and enjoyable. He makes the Grinch lovable and makes the audience feel sorry for him. This might have been his best work yet.
The Grinch is about a person in Who Ville that didn’t like Christmas because of a traumatizing incident during his childhood. He then sets out to the very top of the mountain in Who Ville to avoid the Who’s forever. In the beginning of the movie, he is seen going into the town to reek havoc on Who Ville. A little girl that does not fully understand the true meaning of Christmas sees him. She tries to talk to the Grinch to see why everyone thinks that he is so bad. He frightens her at first, but after a while, she begins to see that he is just a sad man that needs loving. She nominates him as the Honoree of Christmas for Who Ville. He accepts and he has fun that night. The Mayor of the town was a classmate of the Grinch when he was in school. The mayor used to pick on him. He plays a mean trick on the Grinch that night that gets the Grinch furious. He goes back into his mountain to plot a plan to steal Christmas.
His plan was to steal all of the presents of Who Ville. He builds a sled that went house to house. He took all of the presents and brought them back to his lair. When he sees that the people of Who Ville are still singing Christmas carols even without their presents, he realizes that the meaning of Christmas isn’t about presents, it is about having each other. His heart grew three times larger that day and he brought all of the presents back to the people at Who Ville.
This is a story that never gets old. I assume that a great deal of you have already heard the story of the Grinch so I didn’t try to keep the secret. If you have never seen the Grinch, than watch TBS during Christmas, it is one every year several times.
I loved this movie and I’m sure that I will be watching it on video next Christmas with my family. This is a classic that will make us all appreciate Christmas. As you can tell, I loved this movie. Lets see how the Grinch stacks up. Ratings are from one to five stars.
Here’s The Breakdown
Story *****
A classic Christmas story that makes us all appreciate Christmas. This version will make you laugh as well. I love this story. I was concerned at first that maybe this movie would have been bad because they might have altered the story to the point that it became too commercial, and dramatized. This was not the case at all. The story is well intact with some jokes thrown in that make it even better.

Laughs *****
From the trailer, you would guess that this movie’s comedy would have been directed towards small children. Well it is, but it made my friends and I laugh out loud. My only objection is that there could have been more laughs since Jim Carrey was in it. The many parts that were funny, made my stomach hurt. Jim Carrey makes this movie funny.
----------------------------------------------
Special Effects *****
Absolutely flawless special effects from the Who Ville from a distance shot they have him the beginning of the movie, to the flames of the sled when the Grinch rides it. Each shot was made beautifully and with fine detail. I love the snow effects they had. Every cloud, snowflake, and every overview of the town looked great. This was a great step for CGI use in a movie.

Overall *****
I have to admit that the trailer to this movie did not please me and I was thinking of skipping it. Boy I am glad that I saw it tonight because it is a movie event that will be played every year on TV for years to come. Jim Carrey is a very believable Grinch. If you did not tell me that the Grinch was Jim Carrey, I would have never guessed because of the great make-up job that was done. You can hint that it is Jim Carrey because of his talented comedic styles and traits, but he is under a heck of a lot of green make-up. So bring the kids, they won’t be the only ones that will be laughing.
Bottom Line: A great Christmas classic just got better.
