Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
Contrary to what critics say, I think 2001 is turning out to be a stellar year in film. We've been treated with a first class horror film, Hannibal. An amazing drug epic, Blow. A film that is blowing everyone away, Memento. We've had a wonderful family film, Spy Kids. And we've had some better than average action films, 15 Minutes & 3,000 Miles To Graceland. Now 2001 is blessed with a real film treat. Bridget Jones Diary.
Based on the ever so popular book, a book that I have not read, the film stirred some real controversy earlier last year, when Miramax announced that Texas born Renee Zellweger would be playing the English role. Well I caught a sneak peak of the film last night, and let me just tell you that Zellweger is Bridget Jones. I can't imagine anyone else playing the part.
Zellweger is quickly becoming one of my favorite actresses. She was in one of last year's best films, Nurse Betty and now she is in this, and she just shines. She has a flawless British accent, and she is not afraid to drab herself up. She put on a few lbs. for this film, and it's very unflattering on her. It is also very brave. Even being a little heavy, Zellweger manages to be charming. Winning my heart, and the heart of the audience.
Bridget Jones Diary reminds me of an other small film that came out last year. High Fidelity. Both films are clever. They are able to take tired formulas, and make them seem new.
Bridget is not a Hollywood glamor girl. No she's far from it. She is overweight. Smokes and drinks. And worst of all, she has a crush on her boss. Played with slimy delight by Hugh Grant.
Bridget Jones Diary might just be a chick flick in the end. But it's a chick flick everyone can enjoy. It's funny as hell, without doubt the funniest film so far this year. I can't get over how well it's written and how good the performances are. Hugh Grant has never been better. But the real treat, the real reason why you must see this film, is Renee Zellweger. I hope she is remembered come Oscar time next year.
Oddly enough, walking out of the theater, really the only complaint I heard from the audience was about the language. Now, bare in mind I live in Utah, and half the audience was the over 50 crowd. But the language in this film really seemed to offend some people. I guess it has more F*ck's than your average movie, but what do you expect? Their young and English. It's a different time people. So if you don't mind sassy language, you've got to check this film out.
