rodeo7's Full Review: Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
Director Kevin Smith finally gives his drug-dealing duo, Jay and Silent Bob the spotlight in his newest flick Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Having appearances in Mall Rats, Clerks , Chasing Amy, and starring roles in Dogma, this odd pair have created themselves a large following.
The movie stars Jason Mewes as Jay, and Kevin Smith as Silent Bob. Jay’s loud, vulgar mouth contrast Bob’s quiet demeanor. The story begins when Jay and Silent Bob find out a movie called Bluntman and Chronic is being made which is based on a comic book which is based on them. Make sense? When they find out that they have been made fun of on Internet bulletin boards and forums they decide to take a road trip across America to sabotage the making of the movie. You’d think they’d go to Hollywood to obtain their rightful royalties, but that’s just how moronic these two are.
Though the plotline is thin, the laughs are plenty. The movie is mostly a bunch of gags, in-jokes, cameos and great dialogue. I knew there were going to be a lot of cameos, but I wasn’t expecting as many as there actually were when I saw the movie. Some of the other stars and cameo appearances were made by Ben Affleck, George Carlin, Matt Damon, Shannon Elizabeth, Will Farrell, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Jason Lee, Chris Rock, and many many more. My favorite appearance in the movie was that of Mark Hamill because of the way it was presented. You will applaud. I guarantee it.
Additional cameos include, of course, some of Smith’s other characters such as Buddy Christ and Mooby. This is definitely a movie worth watching several times just to catch all the little in-jokes that Smith has thrown into frame. Making fun of as many people, movies, and moviemakers including himself seems to be Smith’s underlying theme here. It definitely brings out the laughs.
I actually had not heard anything about the movie except from a few appearances on late night talk shows by cast members such as Kevin, Shannon and Will Farrell. I’m very glad that I didn’t know much about the movie because all the surprises possibly would have been ruined for me.
With practically every sentence coming out of Jay’s mouth containing vulgarity, this movie is not for everyone. Many of the jokes are lowbrow, sexual in nature, or degrading of someone or something. Many people actually find this type of humor, presented in the way Kevin Smith presents it, to be incredibly hilarious. Smith's many fans, including myself, brought the movie a #1 rating on its opening night.
For fans of Jay and Silent Bob, this is a huge movie and I’m sure every fan caught the flick during opening weekend. The first scene finally divulges the “origins” of the duo. Jay also “matures” slightly as the movie progresses (whoa, who thought that was possible?) I believe this movie also contains the most words spoken by Silent Bob. Kevin also finally added more camera motion! He always said that he can’t shoot action and fight scenes, but he did very well this time around.
Although watching Smith’s previous movies is unnecessary to enjoy this flick, it does help to understand many of the jokes and cameos. Not the greatest movie ever made, it produces laugh after laugh for those that enjoy this type of humor. Right from Jay’s first lines in the movie, to their Orangutan friend’s antics, to the finale musical performance, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is definitely going to be a Smith classic.
Bung!
