Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
The Others and Signs are good movies. Both of them were scary and ominous. The Others was a particularly good movie to see at the drive-in. The Dark house was a nice touch, kind of reversing standard fare on you...as the scenery became brighter the tension actually mounted. Yet...there was one particular scene that ruined the movie for me. Nicole Kidman's character leaves the house and walks into the mist. In the mist she meets her husband who has been missing, and away at war. "Sometimes I bleed," He says, and at that point, in the middle of the movie, I knew the surprise ending. Other than that one scene I thought the movie was good and truly creepy. Definitely one to rent for a scare, but I might not dish out the twenty bucks to buy it.
Signs, like The Others, I found to be genuinely scary in places. What's really, really good about this movie is that it allowed the tension to build and build until it finally came to a white-knuckle climax. There were no "giveaway" scenes like in The Others. Also, there were a few moments of black humor to lighten the suspense a bit. One of the particularly good ones is when Mel Gibson's character comes home to find Joaquim Phoenix and the children holed up in the closet with tinfoil antennas on their heads. Still, it didn't lighten the suspense much. A scene where Mel first encounters an Alien (kind of) peeking under a door, I was literally on the edge of my seat and that's pretty rare. The whole Alien turned out to be kind of weak looking, but otherwise the movie was excellent. This is not only a renter but also a buyer and is well worth the price of the two movies.
