gamblinfamily's Full Review: NASCAR: The Imax Experience
Race Day
Having a family that is militant into NASCAR made this a must see. The closest showing of this was at the Edwards Marq*E. This showing of course cost more than a regular movie, but it's not seen on any old screen either or on any old format for that matter.
NASCAR IMAX is presented in 3-D you collect your glasses from a theater employee on your way in. Almost as fascinating as the movie itself is the anticipation and baited breath of every child coming to see this attraction. The parents and adults of course are just as excited however kids must see that screen and be utterly amazed at it's size.
Gentlemen, start your engines!
You, your child or your inner child is treated to a wonderful history of stock car racing and it's evolution into NASCAR. And of course the coining of the most famous words in racing. The always stated before every race...Gentlemen, start your engines!
You through the eyes of your 3-D glasses are transformed from driver, from the stands observer, and above the track observer perhaps even race team owner. I found myself in the behind the wheel scenes wanting to shift and plotting my next move on the track. There is some crash footage, and one scene that literally jumps out at you. Fans of Dale Earnhardt Sr (and who isn't) will be pleased with the homage paid to the racing legend.
Final Lap...home
True NASCAR fans will also have no problem naming the two drivers who re-enact some old timey scenes. The driving and chemistry of the two drivers made the scene. Which is all I will say without ruining the opening for you. Kiefer Sutherland's narration proves just the right amount of arid and on time delivery.
This presentation was filmed in such a way that you truly DO feel like you are experiencing each turn, or impact. The adrenaline rush and heart pounding I experienced only made me wonder how the real drivers feel each race. Perhaps what kept me going back to the theater to see the showing again is what keeps the drivers climbing back into their drivers seat.
Shuffling out the stands, and heading home
I completely enjoyed this presentation and I am not a NASCAR fan(atic) like my family. The only downside even a sometimes fan like myself could find is the length of the film. Of course perhaps I am just spoiled on the $6.50 it costs to see a two hour movie. Or maybe, just maybe this film roped me in and I wasn't ready for it to end.
