In my opinion, Catwoman is a purrrrfectly fine light, entertaining, not-to-be-taken-too-seriously summer movie. Audiences are treated to the sight of lovely Halle Berry as Patience, a beautiful shy 9-5 working girl and as Catwoman, a buxom vixen in shiny patent leather who wields a whip like no ones business.
The basic plot is well basic. Patience works on an advertising campaign for an evil cosmetic corporation, headed by an evil man and his equally evil wife. Patience looses her job. Patience sees things she shouldnt see at the cosmetic manufacturing lab. Patience gets flushed out waste system and drowns in toxic evil cosmetic waste. Patience is brought back to life by a cat and becomes Catwoman. Catwoman kicks butt while looking sexy in stilettos. Being Catwoman complicates Patiences social life. The media paints Catwoman as a villain. Catwoman saves the day and is absolved of her accused crimes. Catwoman must leave those she loves behind and follow her spirit. THE END!
If you want more specific details of the plot and script and all the cool, funny, ridiculous things that happen in the movie youll want to read many of the other reviews and/or visit the films website at http://catwoman.warnerbros.com/
Personally, I didnt mind the rudimentary plot or the less than Oscar-worthy script. I mostly just enjoyed the action and the eye-candy. Meeeeeee-yowwwww! I can only imagine the heart palpitations, among other reactions, a devoted and lustful male Halle Berry or Sharon Stone fan might experience. Halle is sculpted and sensual in her black leather Catwoman attire her makeup is purrrrrrfectly catlike and her movements are pure feline heat. Im not an angry or violent person but I could watch her kick butt all day and still cheer for more. After all, these are bad guys shes beating up that makes it all right, right? And then we have the alabaster perfection of Sharon Stone. A little scary, a little intimidating, but awe inspiring and breathtaking all at the same time. Her beauty is cold, almost morbidly so like the ivory marble statuary in ancient Cathedrals and tombs but when she parts her lips and narrows her eyes well, you get the idea
On the downside, the CGI affects are rather cartoonish at times. During the coolest and most intense fight scenes, the video game quality of the cat-running-up-the-wall effect was disconcerting and unsettling. I think the movie could have been made better just by leaving out 80-90% of the GCI and just focusing on real life action sequences and old fashioned special effects. Put the gal in a harness and yank her up the wall dont create a GameBoy character and splice it in!
In addition to Berry and Stone the other notable cast members include Benjamin Bratt as Detective Tom Lone and Patiences love interest, Lambert Wilson as George Hedare the aforementioned evil cosmetic CEO, and Frances Conroy as Ophelia Powers, the as yet unmentioned former professor and Catwoman expert who helps Patience understand her transformation and newfound freedom.
Ive read that the film is full of bloopers and bad edits. I wont go into all of the ones I notice, though I probably missed most of them. But the most obvious to me occurred at the very beginning of the movie and annoyed me throughout the whole movie and into today. Near the very beginning of the movie we see Patience at work she goes home sleeps in her PJs all night goes to work the next day. Problem is Patience (and her coworkers) are all in the exact same outfits as the day before. And were not talking basic black, maybe I just thought it was the same but its really must something similar and not uniforms and labcoats. Were talking bright colors, unusual styles, layers and prints and all the same as the day before. No, Patience didnt sleep in her clothes No, its not just later the same day theres a sceen of her in her bed, in her PJs. Of all the possible bad edits, this one just bugs the heck out of me.
On the upside I love the cat humor in the movie. The tuna can scene and the sushi scene were particularly amusing to me. The White Russian scene could only have been better had she lapped it up with her tongue
And I was happy and relieved NOT to find the almost mandatory Pussycat jokes and double-entendres. Actually, for the most part the move was clean and reasonably family friendly as far as a PG-13 rating goes. I mean there was a LOT of violence but its cartoonish, pretend, super-hero/villain kind of violence. Its not a woman being raped or a demonic creature ripping the limbs from a squirming body. Its a hot, agile and assertive female fighting the bad guys (and gals), righting wrongs, and saving the day but not being a perfect angel herself. There is a lot of sensuality to the movie some suggestiveness but no in-your-face getting it on right there on the screen for all to see.
Whether or not to take your kids to the movie is a very personal choice kind of thing. I wouldnt mind either of mine seeing it but at the same time I dont think its a role-model or teach morals kind of movie. I just dont count on mass entertainment to do that job for me. If the movie is treated as entertainment, fluff, pretend, and fantasy then it can probably be enjoyed by almost any age group other than very young children they would probably be bored by most of the movie and perhaps frightened by other parts. But I'd say the ideal audience age is probably late teens, early twenties ... but folks of any age who enjoy comic books, fantasy, Halle Berry, Sharon Stone, leather, or even a light nod toward BDSM would probably enjoy the movie too.
