Adam Sandler plays an ex-NFL football player who was accused in the past of shaving points off a game, accusations which ruined his career. In the opening scene, he pulls a stunt which sends him to the State Pen in Texas where we meet James Cromwell, warden of the prison who has aspirations of becoming Governor. Oh, and he is a big football fan who actually saw to it that Sandler was sent to his prison to help whip the guards' football team into shape by assembling a team of inmate flunkies that the guards can whip up on out on the field. And a televised game between the inmates and the guards just might give the warden the extra publicity push he needs to become Governor.
This Adam Sandler fan was very disappointed. I would not have normally gone to see this movie because even the commercials are unfunny, and studios usually put the funniest stuff in the commercials.
I did not believe any of the relationships. So much weight was given to the bonding between Adam Sandler and his team of tough guy inmate flunkies, but I just didn't buy it.
I am also usually a Chris Rock fan as well. In The Longest Yard, either he was misused or he's just not funny anymore. Hopefully he didn't have any input into the writing of his character, because all his racial comments were tired, old references we've heard hundreds of times. He did get the only funny line in the movie, "I'll teach you how to football, just don't eat me," which is used in the commercials.
I am NOT a Tracy Morgan fan. And Rob Schnieder just kind of pops up toward the end, doing a familiar "You can do it!" character, which seemed somewhat out of place.
There are some good, hard, albeit illegal, hits on the field. Many of the stuntmen also worked on Friday Night Lights.
My favorite part was near the end, the trick play that wins the game. I fell for it.
I regret spending my money on this film. Adam Sandler is better than this, no matter what your opinion is of him. He must be trying to break away from his Billy Madison, Big Daddy, Saturday Night Live persona. He should stick with what made him successful.
