Chris, Chris, my Darling Chris,

Sue, if you liked this film then you're going to be seething when you read my "worst of 2005" list.

I would never seethe, it's terribly unladylike. And you know how much value I place on good manners.

Now where the hell is that list?

To say I didn't like this film is a bit like saying that getting my face chewed off is a bit unpleasant.

Please, tell me that you haven't actually gone and had your face chewed off. I mean, the ditch is one thing, but please, no face gnawing.

So you're saying you didn't like the movie then? I'm shocked. In my own defense, putting Johnny Depp and all those sweets together was going to get me, one way or the other. It was preordained.

Jen,

Sorry I missed this comment!

I thought of something funny from Dr. Seuss...

"BIG S little s Silly Sammy Slick sipped six sodas and got sick sick sick"...LOL! After that I'll stick with water...*chuckle*...

I think that may be the new motto for the Augustus Gloob family! Or probably not.....;)

RandomK,

I guess I'll have to track down this new version and watch it.

You should. It's such fun! And there's chocolate - lots of chocolate. Johnny Depp and chocolate!! Yay!!!

*ahem*

Sorry - got a little carried away. It just isn't every day when they put two of my favorite things together in one movie. I think they might have made this film just for me.

Marie,

It annoyed me too. She did mean well, but she just went entirely too far overboard with it. Hermione is fine as a character most of the time..but when she gets on a cause...she gets annoying.

And I can see Emma Watson being just as annoying in the film version. Down with S.P.E.W.!

;)

Yes they will be. I know I'll go see them in the theater..maybe even within the first few days. If you go earlier, it isn't as bad..at least here.

Oh, those I'll be seeing in the theater. Hopefully early on, but maybe not.....

If I had thought he was too much like Michael Jackson it would have creeped me out too.

No kidding! I can understand why people who made that connection couldn't get past it - I don't think I would have been able to either.

They're great - cheaper, less crowded, don't have to pay a sitter. All good things.

Yup..very good.

I'm so glad they chose that part to cut! It annoys me anyway. I'm re-reading book five before I read six and Hermione is driving me nuts still with it.

It annoyed me too. She did mean well, but she just went entirely too far overboard with it. Hermione is fine as a character most of the time..but when she gets on a cause...she gets annoying.

Perfect summer movies. I wonder if I can get a good seat if I start lining up in, say, February....;)

I agree. If he did remind me of Jackson, the whole thing would have given me the creeps, but he didn't, so it didn't. I actually liked the weird hair and the big teeth and the unhealthy, never-been-outside pallor. It worked well.

I think it worked too. If I had thought he was too much like Michael Jackson it would have creeped me out too. I just didn't get that from the movie.

Richard,

Ok, sleep has been had.. lots of it..

Can you lend me some?

Life would be lovely if could actually buy those from the local Ice-cream vendor.. one can dream...

Oh my. One can indeed. I don't even need the sprinkles, I'll just take the sundae, please. Think of all the people chasing down the ice cream truck to get one of those.....

Ooooh.. It still does play here once (sometimes twice even! Christmas and Easter) And I too find it all very delicious, but I'm a chocolate freak.

I can't remember quite when it played - but it was around some holiday. Probably Easter. As a fellow chocolate freak, I have always, always loved this story - both movies make me happy in a chocolate high kind of way.

All I have to say to that is.. "Yummm, I'm hungry"

Where's that ice cream truck when we want it?!?!

Of course I shall watch this, though I'll wait for the DVD (I have a thing about Cinemas.. I can't get comfy)

You know, for many, many movies I agree completely. Some things I want to see on a big screen, others I don't want to wait for. But I've gotten so used to the luxuries of watching movies in my own house that I rather prefer it now. Especially for anything that might make me cry - I don't like to blubber in public.

I remember when I first heard Depp would be playing Wonka, it immediately felt right.

Absolutely! I was horrified at the prospect of a re-make, until I heard about the casting. No one else could have done it.

Then they spent a good 5 minutes discussing Le Depp's BIG smile in the movie. I don't blame them, it can be nice to look at..

Oh, wait until you see it, it's wonderful! Remember when Matt Dillon got big teeth in "Something About Mary"? It's sort of like that. But on Le Depp - making it ever so much more fabulous.

As always.. wonderbra!!

Jack,

Speaking from past experience?

Of course not! I am the essence of all things pure and innocent. Mostly.

I think you mean the floor. That's why I never wear my good shoes to the theatre, where the combination of Gummy Bears and spilt soda really makes quite the sticky combination.

The floor of the theater in which we saw this very movie was, in fact, rather foul and covered an unidentifiable stickiness. I try not to think too much about how many layers of crud that stuff represents.

Yes, but Burton should be past that already.

Yeah, he probably should. But it was amusing in a nostalgic sort of way. Not enough to save the plot line, but amusing.

I've the feeling that Burton tacked this on just to provide one of his all-time favorite actors with a plum role.

I just read - in some other comment section somewhere, I think - the suggestion that Lee would have made a fabulous Slugworth, and he would have! This version is closer to the book version, which maybe didn't have Slugworth, but still, he would have been great as the arch villain rival candy maker.

They're great - cheaper, less crowded, don't have to pay a sitter. All good things.

the whole S.P.E.W. thing that Hermione was doing in the book didn't make it to the movie. That doesn't bother..that wasn't one of my favorite parts of the book and it wasn't really important to the overall story.

I'm so glad they chose that part to cut! It annoys me anyway. I'm re-reading book five before I read six and Hermione is driving me nuts still with it.

I think the first sequel is due out next summer. And from what I have seen a third movie will be out in summer of 2007.

I didn't either. Depp's Wonka was wacky and a bit kooky..but that is very different from Michael Jackson freakish. At least I think so.

I would love that! School is starting soon, I'm going to have to make a concerted effort to see matinees.

Matinees are usually less crowded too. I do prefer it when the crowds aren't too huge.

My son has seen the trailer but I haven't. I was hoping it would play before this film, but it didn't. Goblet of Fire is also my favorite of the books so far (I haven't yet read number six) so I'm eager to see it on the big screen.

I've seen the trailer for Goblet of Fire at the theater two or three times now. I did just read something about the movie..the whole S.P.E.W. thing that Hermione was doing in the book didn't make it to the movie. That doesn't bother..that wasn't one of my favorite parts of the book and it wasn't really important to the overall story.

Yay for Cap'n Jack! Someone actually gave me a framed picture of him for my birthday (gag gift, of course - not that I won't keep it on my bedside table....;). Do you know when the first sequel is coming out?

I went out and bought a Captain Jack poster. Need to frame it now. :)
I think the first sequel is due out next summer. And from what I have seen a third movie will be out in summer of 2007.

I didn't get the freakish vibe from Depp either. I know a couple of people who hated the movie because they thought he was too Michael Jackson-ish - but I really didn't see the character that way.

Tommy Bucket,

Smashing review!

Thank you, sir!

I too enjoyed this film immensely, a wonderful smile raiser it was (saw it last night in-fact in a late showing, which meant fortunately there were hardly any obnoxious kids in the cinema aisles).

It's such fun. I brought both my kids and they agreed. Fortunately for me, they didn't feel the need to dance in the aisles....;)

Whenever cinema seems to be getting boring and bland, you can always count on Tim Burton to make it fresh and exciting again. He did a marvelous job, again.

He certainly has a way with effects and visuals in general. It's very distinctive, his style, but always fun.

I thought your review was especially spot on and detailed, particularly your bits about the new Oompa Loompas compared to the old ones and the rather tangenting childhood flashbacks (I really didn't get that bit with the house being transposed into the arctic wilderness without any given reason how or why).

I really liked these Oompa Loompas - I loved that they were all one guy in different outfits. He was perfect! The childhood flashbacks, well, I guess I can't expect every part of a film to be exactly to my liking. I suppose they were sort of cute, but they didn't cut it for me. I know why the house was transposed, but if I tell you it'll be a spoiler - you can drop me an email if you want my theory...;)

I especially loved this bit: the towering wedding cake of a factory. I really did have an incredible urge to buy some chocholate bars after watching this film, (but somehow I ended up changing my mind and buying a kebab instead).

I wanted chocolate the entire time. I felt a little like I could become Augustus Gloop, given the chance. But I too fought the urge. Maybe because I didn't go home to a chocolate factory....

Personally I loved the darling little brat, Veruca "Daddy, I want another pony!" Salt- the spoilt child in all of us (and British to boot).

She was okay - but I loved the first one much more. Perhaps this one simply wasn't given as much time to be her wonderful, horrible self. I loved Violet, though.

No kidding - I get really cranky when I go to the theater and the movie stinks (like The Village - bah)

I remember reading your review of that one and how you felt about it.

It hasn't been very long! I don't know what's gotten into me. All this "leaving the house" stuff....;)

You keep this pace up and you might start seeing as many as I do.;)

I'm excited for the next Harry Potter - though I wish they had gotten Cuaron to direct again.

He is - he never seems to take a role where the character isn't! I liked his Willy Wonka too.

I think just about every movie I've seen him in has had a character that was wacky in some way. His characters always seem to have quirks of some kind. Makes for very interesting characters. I'm really looking foward to seeing him as Captain Jack Sparrow again. I love that character. I like his Wonka too. He was a bit..odd, but I didn't get the freaky vibe from him that some people said they did.
