Thanks, Tim! I liked the movie all right, but it was more like fictional characters to me.

Thanks, I think the people who rated this movie highly didn't know the real June Carter.

A good thoughtful review. (Reply to this comment)

I liked it a lot more than you though. I agree that although they captured the psychology they did not look the parts at all, but I can overlook that completely because I can never see anyone replacing someone who has died. As long as they capture some real defining moments and personality I can be happy. Reese was great and deserving of an oscar but I agree they should have been honest enough to cast someone more "homely," as June never was a great beauty. Another thing that was missing was the last half of their lives! I was a little disappointed that the movies spanned only the first half. I saw them with their son John in concert at the University Of Kentucky Coliseum a few years back. They were wonderful together.

Great Review As Per Usual (Reply to this comment)

Supremely accurate, especially in your juxtaposition of Reese Witherspoon against the real June Carter Cash.

Thanks, Sue. Johnny Cash had a very identifiable persona and it's hard to fake him. This film will appeal to the younger folks who have only heard of him but not been familiar with him. Also, the movie was quite draggy except for the stage scenes. June Carter was about 180 degrees different than the perky Reese. Think dowdy, long gown, long straight hair, and gospel songs and Reese was nothing like that, although I liked her performance, it wasn't true to life.

Hey Mark! Johnny Cash is always popular around my house, too, but this didn't bring it home for me. Glad you liked it, though!

many overtly negative reviews of this one. It's sort of refreshing - and really well done, of course!

I'm a little surprised that this movie didn't appeal to you quite as much as it did to me. I'm gonna have to watch it again and see if I don't agree with you on some of your points (not that watching it will be especially painful...I've always been a fan of the Man in Black).

you said...
"The guys who played Johnnys contemporaries - Elvis, Roy Orbison, and Jerry Lee Lewis were really not too close to the real guys either."
My family was watching this and as I walked through the room the Elvis character was on screen. You are right . . .'really not too close.' I had to ask who it was supposed to be.
Probably not my kinda flick . . .as your review reassures me.
Very nicely done.
