dragonfire88's Full Review: Flushed Away
I have been wanting to see Flushed Away for months, ever since I first saw a trailer for the movie. The trailer looked really cute and my expectations were somewhat high since it was made by Aardman, the company responsible for Wallace and Gromit.
Roddy was a pet rat living in a very nice apartment in London. When the family went away on a trip, Roddy enjoyed having the run of the apartment even though he was alone. He heard strange noises at night and discovered that Sid, a sewer rat, was in the kitchen. Roddy tried to trick Sid into getting in the toilet to be flushed but Sid realized what was going on and managed to flush Roddy instead. Roddy ended up in a rat city in the sewer. He wanted to get back to his home and he met up with Rita, a boat captain. She agreed to help Roddy even though she was running from Toad and his thugs, Whitey and Spike. Toad got impatient and called in his cousin, Le Frog, for help.
Flushed Away was a very cute animated movie. I thought this was one of the better animated movies I have seen this year. The plot was interesting without being overly complicated, so kids shouldnt have any trouble following what is going on. The movie was predictable overall, something that does tend to happen in most animated movies. I was surprised by a few things that happened even though there werent any big surprises. The movie was very entertaining even though it didnt really have any surprises.
I thought that Flushed Away was a very funny movie. It made me laugh many times and really is one of the funnier movies that Ive seen this year. Roddy was completely out of his element once he was in the sewer, which did add a lot of humor. That aspect of the movie wasnt the most original, but it was still very entertaining. Slugs were around in many of the scenes. I thought they were hilarious, especially when they would start singing different songs. Every song they sang fit in perfectly. Roddy also sang a few songs, including acting like Tom Jones at one point. Le Frog and the frogs working with him were also very funny. Some of the things that were done to add humor were a little silly which might bother some viewers. There were a few gross jokes used.
Throughout the movie there were little things that connected to other movies that added several laughs. At the beginning of the movie when Roddy was trying to decide on what to wear, he pulled out a shirt and vest like Wallace wears and then was considering wearing a Wolverine outfit. There were some stuffed bunnies in the little girls room that looked like the bunnies from Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit and a stuffed Alex from Madagascar. Later in the movie, when Rita was going through stuff on her boat, she had a stick with Gromits head on it. There was one joke early in the movie that seemed to be referencing Finding Nemo as well.
Aardman has been known for using stop motion animation with clay in their previous projects, like Chicken Run, the Wallace and Gromit shorts, and Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. For Flushed Away, they have entered the world of computer animation. I read that the decision was made because of all the water in this movie. The characters had the same look, especially in the mouth area, as the characters from other Aardman projects. The animation was very well done and the water did look realistic. Dreamworks, which has been known for computer animated movies for several years now, was also involved in the making of this movie. I have seen and enjoyed their other movies, though I havent liked them as well as the movies from Pixar. I loved Flushed Away and think it is one of the better animated movies released this year. I think the influence of Aardman is why I liked it as much as I did.
Roddy was a pet rat that lived in a very nice apartment in London. He had been pampered and had no idea how to survive in the sewer. I thought that Hugh Jackman did a good job with the voice. Sid was the sewer rat that ended up in Roddys home. Sid was bossy, rude, and a bit gross. Rita didnt like Roddy when they first met, but she agreed to help him. She was trying to do something to help her family. Her voice was provided by Kate Winslet. Ritas family was shown in a few scenes.
Toad seemed to control things in the sewer. He had Whitey and Spike working for him even though he didnt like rats. Toad wasnt a nice character and was plotting something. The voice that Ian McKellan provided fit the character perfectly. I didnt recognize Bill Nighy as Whitey or Andy Serkis as Spike. Whitey said some funny things at times. Le Frog was Toads French cousin.
Voice Talent
Hugh Jackman - Roddy
Ian McKellan - Toad
Bill Nighy - Whitey
Jean Reno - Le Frog
Shane Richie - Sid
Andy Serkis - Spike
Kate Winslet - Rita
