| jo.com's Full Review: Sharp FO 2950 Plain Paper Laser Fax |
For the first time in 1-½ years a couple of weeks ago I found myself working in an office. I have worked in the past 1-½ years but had not used business machines. For 2 weeks I worked for engineers as a temporary receptionist and had use of the gadgets.
One gadget was the fax machine. I can’t tell you technologically how it works because I have no idea. I’m still working on telephones and televisions! I can tell you how it functions, though and what it does. I will tell you that the Sharp Ux-1100 plain paper facsimile is a wonderfully easy machine to operate and in the 2 weeks I have been working for these engineers it has never failed me or given me any trouble.
It measures 14 inches across and that is at its widest which includes the phone handle. At its longest which includes both the paper holder and paper support it measures 23 inches. I’m giving you these measurements to show you how small it is. It sits on a table leaving plenty of room for the faxes themselves and cover letters that you may want to send.
I just mentioned 2 functions of this machine and I will elaborate.
The paper holder sits in the front making it simple to add paper. A plastic cover slips off and the paper sits in the holder. What I call the paper support is in back of the machine. As faxes come in rather than having them fall this holds them upright. A nice little extra feature, in my opinion. I did not have the manufacturer's brochure so I am giving you my very own words and some of those words like "plastic cover" may have a fancy name!
The Sharp fax machine has places on it to program in frequently called numbers just as a phone would have; it has speed dial, speed redial and volume control. It also has a speaker function, which I liked to use when I faxed something. The speaker function let me hear the number being dialed. For example, one number I called did not answer. We either had the wrong number or they did not have their fax machine on. In any case, it was much easier for me to know that this wasn’t being picked up with the speaker on. But this isn’t necessary and I imagine that in very quiet offices you would not want to use this function.
Being somewhat new to business gadgets (I have used a fax machine in my previous job but it wasn’t part of my job.) it took me a time or two to realize it was the fax machine ringing and not the phone line. The office had 3 lines, 2 of which were telephone lines and one was for the fax machine. The telephone rang with a slightly different sound than the ringing when a fax came in. It also made a ringing noise when the fax was finished coming in so I knew the fax was finished.
This machine always worked properly. Previously the fax machine I used did not and I had to send one piece of paper at a time. This Sharp can handle multiple pieces of paper – no jamming, no sending of 2 at a time, just continuous faxing. It was wonderful to use.
Operating the machine is so simple. I didn’t have to be shown how to use it is so evident. Granted I have used one before so it wasn’t totally a new experience and that may have helped, but it truly is easy. There are adjustments for the size of the paper you are sending, as you would find on some computer printers or typewriters. The papers you want to send are put between the adjustments, dial the number, hit start and presto.
The Sharp easily makes copies also. I just put in the original as if I were faxing it, but hit copy instead of the phone number and start and a copy will come out along with your original. A nice little feature to have!
I would highly recommend this Sharp fax machine for your home or business. For around $100 you can't ask for a better buy. It is terrific.
