I have been dying to go to Alaska for a couple years now, this review makes me even more anxious for that trip which MUST include Glacier Bay

Commercial Fishing (Reply to this comment)
by Uncle_Tippet
Just a follow up comment. The folks in Gustavus and surrounding areas have been hard hit by the ban in commercial fishing in the area since the ban was instituted in the '90s. For those interested in the history of the ban, check out: http://www.nps.gov/glba/InDepth/learn/preserve/issues/fish/history.htm
Our cab driver in Gustavus used to fish commercially but since that has dried up -- the cab business is only active during the summer instead of in other parts of the year. However, sport fishing is still popular around the Glacier Bay area.

The town Gustavus lies outside the park boundaries. So I believe most of the fishing will be outside park boundaries. There are several rivers that run through town that are good for fly fishing. Also, fishing charters bring folks out in the waters around the Bay. I don't know for sure, but I believe they must fish outside the park boundaries.

What a fantastic holiday you had and you have written a great review as well!
I loved your encounter with the man-eating Killer Whale (LOL) and walking on a trail with fresh bear poop would have been pretty nerve wracking as well I would imagine.
No doubt they were man eating Grizzly Bears too.
Cheers ~
